Ukrainian POWs say torture is common in Russian camps | DW News

The United Nations says Ukrainian soldiers released from captivity in Russia say they were mistreated and in most cases tortured. The head of the U-N Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine Danielle Bell says prisoners of war report being subjected to ‘unimaginable cruelty.’ DW’s Sonia Phalnikar spoke to one Ukrainian soldier trying to recover, after being interned in Russia for two years.

  1. Starvation is the worst kind of torture, you can see it in the pictures, doesnt matter what anyone says.

  2. She has conveniently forgot to mention that Azov was also on the US list of terrorist organisations. Neither has she provided with at least a brief description of the ideological content of Azov movement. Absence of transparency makes it difficult to believe in the allegations she is trying to present.

  3. The UN is corrupt to the core. The red cross is corrupt to the core. And the west does nothing! The west is going to realise what is coming to them. As I have said from the start, "civilians under the NATO umbrella are going to be massacred". NATO does not exist!

  14. Azov is so feared because they are an elite group and are well trained, more trained then most Russians. This means they wont back down and will die fighting. Russia doesn't like this.

  19. UN of course only looking on one side of the story. His story halls apart when it comes to starvation. Real starvation would make him look very differently after two years.

  20. UN is so full of it. Ukrainian conditions are fully compliant with international law. Utter liars. In Ukraine they don’t know what laws are.

  24. The Russians employed this tactic in most of its wars. They release the most abused prisoners in order that they can spread the word of their mistreatment, thus motivating soldiers to surrender. The entire Russian military is geared toward abuse.

  25. I don’t care one bit about any findings regarding Russia if it comes from the UN!! If the UN really meant anything, the minute Russia invaded Ukraine, it would have been kicked off the Security Council and maybe kicked out of the UN altogether! The Mission of the UN is that borders are set and no longer will border disputes be handled by WAR!! That’s it! And it’s worked well for almost 80 years UNTIL Russia invaded Ukraine in 2014 and the entirety of Ukraine in 2022. Yet, 2 1/2 years later Russia sits still on the Security Council! The UN said they couldn’t do anything because there was no mechanism for removing any of the 5 permanent members. I say HOGWASH!! Just by virtue of completely making a mockery of the UN Mission, they ignored the Mission and that should be all it takes. They signed the agreement and that implied that if a country regegs on that pledge then they are out!😊

  26. Very unfortunate situation. War facilities exposing brutal side & dark side of human mind. Both sides are indulging in this beastly and evil practices. May 2014 Oddesa city burning alive of 50 people followed by roits, beatings internal as well as external migration had started this evil feeling of HATE towards each other between people living like brother is quite a sorry state of affairs.
