Can confirm,
Doctor told me in December I’m 18 months minimum for my knee surgery
Every cloud though: I just got upgraded to a private hospital for my next cancer scans
So their plan to clear the backlog is to just wait until those in the queue die.
Initial appointment for transgender patients seeking gender-affirming care is on a waiting list of [four fucking years](https://www.reuters.com/article/us-health-lgbt-transgender/trans-people-waiting-years-for-gender-healthcare-as-demand-surges-idUSKBN2IM0FQ). For something with no surgery required, no specialty required, just to talk to someone about next steps and referrals for mental healthcare and possible future surgeries, and potentially starting generic medications that are readily available worldwide and have blood drawn for baseline hormone levels.
we need a spotlight on waiting lists for mental health treatment too, I can only speak for adult adhd assessments but it was a 3 year waiting list for me just for diagnosis (and they weren’t quite sure in my case, but that’s a long story ><)… this was before the pandemic too so I can only imagine it’s worse now
the ridiculous thing is adhd is a highly treatable condition, the best out of any of the psychiatric disorders really (about 85% of people respond favourably to medication), and adhd is associated with a whole host of adverse life events; driving accidents, addictions, obesity, poor employment, diabetes… it’s a considerable burden on society
so we either need more funding for adhd assessments and treatment, or we need to let gps prescribe adhd medication under strict guidance, but something needs to change, and yep I’m sure this applies to many other conditions too but as I say, I’ve only got experience with the adhd process
(as with many things, it’s an issue that disproportionately affects women too, they’re particularly under-diagnosed because of outdated stereotypes)
Here comes the full spin for “we need the help of the private sector” to justify paying 3x the money for a service that the NHS could provide if properly funded.
Labour gets in next election 2024. Starts to spend more money on the NHS. Tories moan about Gov spending their tax money on the NHS and the Daily Mail has a headline every day about YOUR tax being wasted on illegal health tourists, and the scandalous price of NHS toilet paper. 2044 everyone votes Tory and PM Wilfred Johnson walks into Downing Street to start the next round of austerity. The cycle of shit is complete.
