Body image and male identity | DW Documentary

“Pretty people have it easier in life,” says 15-year-old Moritz. When he posts a video of his body on social media for the first time at the age of 13, it takes a toll: Moritz is bullied at school and starts thinking he’s far too chubby.

These days, does the path to masculinity lead straight through the gym? Are boys no longer allowed to be slim or chubby? For almost a year, the filmmakers follow five young men as they make their way from their childhood bedrooms onto social media and into the gym, documenting their journeys around body image and male identity.

  1. I was 21 when I started a body building regimen, by the the time I was 24 I already look good , the hardest part is the diet even having a cheat day a week can set you back further and frustration there will be months of hard working and there seems no improvement not just that , but you have to take care of your skin as well keep , it can really pays off , getting more attention from women , weird thing is Im in that mode, im looking for real love at that time and dating seems shallow during that time.

I stopped working out when I was 25 since food is where I can only satisfcation and need to focus on work which became hectic

  2. I have spent 10 years working out routine, I still haven't got 6 back (other muscles still pumped). Although everyone really want to get 6 packs, it's better if i keep on this routine regularly for me

  3. Eating well, no highly processed food, working out, getting some muscles is fine, but overdoing it isn't. A meat loaf doesn't even look good. The main part is that you cannot change the looks of your face or your private parts anyway. A dumb looking face is not changed by a lot of muscles on your body.
Translation is not done well at times. Colloquial language is translated into formal language.

  4. “We forfeit three-fourths of ourselves in order to be like other people.” ― Arthur Schopenhauer

as an elite boxer and someone who was literally built like a greek god i'm here to tell you that the only light you should follow is the one within your own heart, go within, look inside yourselves for a meaning, follow your heart for life is too short to do things for how others view you, philosophically it is suspect to start something because of how others view you and now you've become someone you're not and so you've given that much power to the other person that they've now invented you into something you're not, this is the peak of insecurity

  5. They do it not because of health or exercise. But because of peer pressure, social media and for someone else. That’s a very toxic culture.

  6. I agree with all the comments on how physical appearance can't change what's in your mind and stuff but I'll like to add that it's been almost a year since I've been hitting the gym and there is obviously a change in my physical appearance which eventually has increased my friends and my social circle. I don't need any validation or confirmation on the fact that I'm a good person or not but it is the harsh truth of the society that if not majority infact all the people do give importance to how you look and perceive an image of you based on that first , then only they consider to even talk to you these days. In the long run yes your personality and attitude is what matters the most but in today's world you have to make that initial impact to even showcase of how are you as a person.

  7. Their concerns were the same as mine 25 years ago when I was a teen. I was an athlete so training was a part of my life. But back then I didn’t have the pressure of social media, only the intrinsic motivation to look good. If I were born in this generation, I’d be so much insecure since Instagram will show the exception, and not the norm.

  8. I take what I see in social media as mere ideas suggestions and not pressures to make me go beyond extreme measures. I then perform what suits me well

  9. I guess I'm kind of weird and late. I just played online games back then and didn't do much social media. I started becoming conscious with my body image at 17. A little bit of it can be beneficial to monitor what measures to take for the body and what to avoid

  10. It's been almost 8 years since I started routinely working out in mid 20s. The only thing that I always regret is why I didn't begin it ealier. Strength, aesthetic body and flexibility are still my priorities.
These sort of documentaries are just spreading woke ideas which is the ideology of weak people, psychopaths and perverts.

  11. Guys who have a lot of muscle the studies say that most girls are not attracted to guys with muscle. I also am a trans guy so I take a type of seriod. I know it is addictive but with me I do not look forward to sticking myself with a needle once a week. If there was another way I would. It is difficult to go off of so what I read and heard. I produce no hormones now so I need it. Alcohol is also estrogen. I did not fine that out until latter on. I was never a drinker myself.

  12. I think it’s great for kids to go to the gym. I rather have them in a gym working out with their friends than in the streets getting in trouble and doing stupid tik tok dances

  13. Welcome to a new wave of mental health issues. On the surface of it, working out is to applauded. Being fit is good for quality of life and life expectancy. But that’s not the motivator here. Low self esteem cultivated in the Petrie dish of social media is the driving force. And that is a problem.

  14. These boys dont realize that many bodybuilders and fitness 'influencers' that they admire soo much are actually using steroids to get that dream jacked body !😅😅

  15. The problem is young people hopping on steroids too early when they haven't even maximised natural gains. Once you juice you can't go back, roids gains need roids, natty gains are yours. Being impatient will give you many problems, shrunken testis etc. give it 10 years natty then hop on if you really want. Forget the kids on tren too late for them. Natty is the way.

  16. Is it evil to be Male and have muscles?

In Germany we have so much Propaganda that is more or less Impossible to get the truth.
We have to watch foreign News and alternative Media.
For example they tried to kill Trump, in the German Media you could find information that there were some cracking Sounds.
As Well as the AFD, the Party that Tries to move Germany to an independent sovereign Free and democratic country, they are Just writing some false information.
I Hope Donald Trump, the AFD, Nigel Farage, the serbian Prime Minister, Aleksander Vucic, Robert Fico stay or will become the Power.
Otherwise the West is ruled by some puppets that are pushing the West in wars that are based on lies.
Not everyone wants to be ruled by the Deep State.

  17. Here in my USA boys and young men are dropping dead from roids. My hope and prayer is these amazing guys stay natty and base their self esteem on that they are kind loving compassionate good empathetic helpful guys 💪🏼💙

  18. Moral of the story: fix problems internally before fixing them externally or the mental suffering will never end until you die
