Having a proper independant judiciary system is pushing Poland and Hungary to the brink ?
How does the Spectator always manage to have the worst takes imaginable?
One over the edge would be ok with me
I did not know this is our brink.
Its rather the other way around, imho.
> The democratic choices of the Hungarian and Polish people have therefore become of paramount importance to the future of the rule of law dispute. After Wednesday’s ruling, right-wing governments will interpret victory as approval for their stance against the EU — and as an encouragement to double down on rebellious policies.
> This is all grist to the mill of progressive MEPs longing for a make-or-break moment in the EU’s relations with conservative member states. Yet curiously Ursula von der Leyen excused herself from the European parliament debate on the rule of law verdict — that reveals a telling reticence on behalf of the European Commission. It may now be dawning on the bloc’s lawmakers that their rule of law crusade brings a whole new significance to Hungarian and Polish elections; votes that could, in the face of aggression, make questions over continued membership of the EU far more urgent.
“Democratic choices” – in a climate of state controlled media, aggressive propaganda, voter suppression and many more fun things.
“Rebellious policies” – such as draconian anti-abortion laws, anti-LGBT zones, media consolidation, attacks on the independent judiciary, state indoctrination in schools etc.
“Progressive MEPs” – yes, the infamously progressive, Christian-conservative EPP for example. Those dirty leftists just can’t leave Hungary and Poland alone!
“Conservative member states” – Fascism is the new conservatism, guys.
“Rule of law crusade”, “in the face of aggression” – really aggressive of the EU to insist on things like independent judges. We’re oppressing the poor authoritarians.
“questions over continued membership of the EU” – that wet British fever dream will never happen.

Damn. I often complain about the absolute dog shit state of the British media, but at least make it a little more subtle which side you’re on here, spectator.
