Wow, they even had a colosseum back then too
It’s easy forget today how large and tall the Colosseum actually was… In it’s heyday it must have been quite the grand sight, when it’s this imposing even when in ruins.
How many photos exist today of Rome? Billions, trillions?
Interesting.
The Imperial Forum is under all of that. (I think)
is this a copper plate pinhole camera or is this pinhole and silver halide on glass?
Is that the Vatican in the background?
Wish we invented photographs much earliers. We would have pre-napoleonic cities and people and would be mind blowing.
I can imagine the Assassins Creed devs looked at this image over and over again
almost 100 years before the WWII and the city is in ruins already
There isn’t exactly an abundance of pictures from this point because you need professional connections to get up there, it’s closed for the public.
Note how relatively recent modernizations in old buildings were reverted to return them to more “original” states, most notably in the building with the arcade in the foreground.
