Is it time for the EU to include a united Ireland as one of its common policies?

  1. So that would be both the EU and Ireland openly admitting that democracy in NI and the GFA no longer matters? That would be monumentally moronic.

This is why you don’t ask random members of the public for opinions and then dress it up as a legit article. Jeez, and I thought UK papers were shameless.

  2. Why? It doesn’t make any sense to force the issue, especially when the majority of Northern Ireland don’t want it

  3. The moment the public both in the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland show majority support for that – yes.

Until then don’t touch the topic with a barge pole.

  4. Yes please. Here in England we’re fed up to the back teeth of having to accommodate the whims of the sectarian nutters who insist on killing each other in the name of some war of religion that was fought in the 17th century. Even worse we have to spend tens of billions a year to keep them happy.

So the sooner the Republic takes over the responsibility and the running costs, the better.

  5. It’s not up to anyone but the citizens of Northern Ireland.

Good friday agreement and all that. It’s definitely also not the business of GB, much as it rankles with them 😉

  6. Ireland has never been united except under British rule. Its not an occupied state. So I guess the logical solution would be to fuck off.

  7. It is too obvious intentional trolling, though if Ireland wants to push it, fair enough…

  8. This isn’t even a policy in Ireland. Ireland is open to a United Ireland but only under the GFA if the people of NI want it. Ireland does NOT actively work towards a united Ireland and just prepares incase NI decides it wants it.

This article is just shit stirring click bait.

  9. As part of the Good Friday Agreement, Ireland amended its Constitution to remove any claim to Northern Ireland in perpetuity.

The only way Northern Ireland re-unites with Ireland is by the democratic decision of the people of Northern Ireland : no-one else gets to make that decision for them and no-one gets to tell them that they have to vote if they aren’t ready to make that decision.

(Obviously Ireland would have to vote to accept the reunion, but that won’t be a problem).

  10. Terrible letter to the editor piece, I’d rather have no foreigners interfering. The conditions for a united ireland are laid out in the GFA between Ireland and the United Kingdom. The EU and everyone else should keep their nose out of it as it has been the case so far.

  11. I honestly never see a UI..

In my time spent and working in NI i never really came across staunch “Irish” folks.. Most were Brits or if not, uniquely Northern Irish only..

Maybe the polls say otherwise but i think went it came to the crunch, the people would not want to leave a genuinely great country to become part of a little country under the EU umbrella
