  1. The opening of the report by the Comptroller and Auditor General is gas. “The sole focus of the report is on the performance of the University, and not on that of its staff members or any third party.” Long paragraph then “for the avoidance of doubt” about how it doesn’t criticise any individuals at all.

About sums up accountability in the public service. “The semi-sentient University did things all by itself, which were regrettable.”

Cowboy season is wild this year, it’s as if there a secret competition to see who can be Ireland’s most incompetent public worker.

  3. Wastefulness at a certain threshold that appears wilful should be considered criminal. Corrupt or not. Even the bypassing of governance structures to write cheques element should be a crime.

Even if it’s investigated as something similar to corporate enforcement except for public bodies the people responsible for this need to be disbarred from holding any similar office in future.

Turkeys don’t vote for Christmas but there can’t be zero consequences for this in public life, save for going over by the PAC, making you the victim before you head off with a massive pension. Sickening.
