I saw a comic that basically listed some mythological animals. One of them is "Vaadan", which the comment section also couldn't find it on google. Someone said it's "Vaadin", which I did find not much stuff. (a tumblr and deviantart page, a twitter about this, etc etc)
the oldest source, I think, is here

Finns and Karelians also had their fair share of reindeer tales and songs, like the Songs of Vaadin. Vaadin (which is also the name for a female reindeer) was created by Seppo Ilmarinen (of Finnish epic poem Kalevala fame) to assist him on his journeys for knowledge. Seppo was an immortal artificer capable of crafting anything.

But I couldn't find much of anything from now on, wikipedia on both English and Finnish page about Ilmarinen doesn't say anything about the deer either.

So I just needed to know is this a real mythology or not.

  1. Only mythological deer-type animal that I know in finland is ”Hiiden hirvi”.

  2. Check out the Nordic animism website. If there is anything, he has covered it.

  3. There is an old finnish movie called The White Reindeer. Its about a woman that turns into a white reindeer during full moon so I started looking if its based on some old mythology. From the archive of old finnish poems I found this,

Its whats left of an old song/poem that had a witch who was able to transform herself into a white reindeer (vaadin).

So maybe Vaadin is just that, a witch that is able to turn into a white reindeer. I see if I can find more.

  4. Couldn’t find anything named that in Mythologia Fennica.
