Sampsa, son of the fields. After Väinämöinen is ‘born’, he finds the newly created lands barren. Sampsa sowed spruce, pine, birch, aspen, cherry, rowan, willow, juniper and oak. One of the oaks grew so large that it blocked out the sun. I tried to draw this but it was difficult to get the sense of scale right. But anyway, soon after, Väinämöinen asks his mom (Ilmatar) to get rid of the tree. She summons a tiny person who quickly grows into a fire axe wielding giant. (I tried to get that guy in the drawing as well, but couldn’t make it work). I’ve added some birds (jays) because Väinämöinen burns some trees to make fields for his crops. He leaves a birch for the birds to land on.

I’ve had a week off, but I notice I’m running a bit dry on Kalevala characters:s Maybe Ilmatar is a good one to do next, or maybe Ukko. And there is all of Kullervo’s stories. But I can’t really think of an interesting drawing composition. I’d love to hear any ideas and suggestions!
