“The state-owned heat and gas provider for Vienna, Wien Energie, will avoid purchasing Russian gas and ensure none is sold to its customers from 2025, according to a statement on Friday (13 September).”
Ditch, or be forced to, because there will be no flow through the pipe after end of 2024?
Nice of Austria to show some spine.
Or will they just start buying that same gas from some middle man, transported half way around the globe and sold to them at double the price?
What will they replace it with though?
What took them so long?
About that time, eh, chaps?
How much more expensive will it be?
For some context, in 2018 the government back then signed a contract with Russia for gas delivery until 2040 with no way to back out.
So this means, as long as Russia is actually offering gas, until 2040 we have to pay for that no matter whether Austria uses it or not.

Austria has become a joke at this point.
They’re at times riding Putin’s silo harder than Serbia and Hungary
I hope we can completely destroy all the infra that delivers Russian gas to Europe soon. Central Europe has had almost 3 years to fix it, if they aren’t done by now no one will feel sorry if they freeze or get huge heating bills next winter. They had decades to fix it before the war too. There are no excuses for heating homes with gas in general in 2024 and absolutely no excuses for using Russian gas in particular. Just bloody fix your heating.
Will they buy it from India (who, in turn – are actually buying it from Russia)?
