All seems pretty normal to be tbh, makes me wonder what convenience stores are like in England. Out of interest did anyone go see him play the other night? Seems like a sound bloke.

  1. >makes me wonder what convenience stores are like in England.

Absolutely dire. Maybe it’s the cost of rent or whatever, but they’re generally tiny so you don’t get so wide a selection of stuff. No sandwich counters or delis generally either.

  2. It’s cos the general political/economic/social situation here is so dire we’ve as a society developed a post meal “little treat” survival mechanic to keep ourselves from going insane, so naturally centra/spar have capitalised on that

  3. put down

    yer phone clown,

    have a jook

    at a book,

The person, be it gentleman or lady,

who has not pleasure in a good novel,

    must be intolerably stupid

  4. I moved to England a week and a half ago and I miss centra more than I ever imagined possible

  5. God I wish I was this simple. Spend each day in a state of amazement instead of cynicism and niggling dread.

  6. We are truly in the 21st century. Glad others get to see how advanced it is.

  7. My gf and I live in London. The last time I took her back to NI, we popped into a Spar garage and she probably spent 20 minutes looking through the snacks/treats/junk on offer. It never really occurred to me how good our convenience store scene is but it is head and shoulders above what’s on offer in England.

  8. My mate is English and he works over here now and he is always sending his mates back home pictures of fry’s and chicken curry’s he gets from our garages, He gets so excited about the hot food we do at garages over here because they don’t do it in England apparently.

  9. Currently in japan.
Can confirm they are the only country that do corner shaps better than us (at least as far as i have seen). Unreal. Lawson FTW.

  10. Them cheese toastie walkers are a fuckin abomination tho. Actually stinkin

  11. England tends to have a greater abundance of supermarket metro off-shots with equivalent selections.. eg

    Asda express, sainsburys local etc.

Comer shop chains such as day-today , family shoppers , nisa and mace etc are generally only viewed as places to pick-up essentials in emergencies or between weekly or biweekly supermarket visits..

Garages here can be a little like England’s motorway service stop shops re offering a larger selection of items and novelties.

Historically, they probably filled a niche due to later opening times than normal shops + serving otherwise more rural or outlaying communities otherwise underserved by larger grocery chains.

In the context of corner shop chains – the above is probably a strange or surprising novelty to English visitors.
