Wolfgang Ischinger on Ukraine, NATO and the US election | DW News

DW’s Carolina Chimoy caught up with former German Ambassador to the US and former chair of the Munich Security Conference Wolfgang Ischinger in Kyiv.
He expressed hope that Ukraine would be allowed to use long-range missiles to strike deep within Europe, and discussed his proposal that Ukraine should be free to use NATO weapons in any way they see fit, as long as they abide by international law.
He also discussed the importance of Europe’s military support for Ukraine. When asked about the US election, he responded that it was vital that European countries, and particularly Germany, are able to defend themselves without relying on the US.

  1. If you want to help Europe, stop getting them into wars they don’t need and make Russia a trading partner.

  2. Chancellor Sholtz hasn't even sent any long range missiles. the decision is with Kier Starmer and Joe Biden Not Scoltz and I think Macron should involved also. But not Scholtz. he has shown zero leadership.

  3. Okay, I understand that Putin's warning can not be taken for granted. Some call it a bluff. It is more likely not to happen than happen. But there is still a chance, right? And if there is a 1/3 chance that Putin will follow through with an escalation leading to WW3, we can call this interview something like "Let's guys play Russian roulette."

  4. I am getting so weary of Deutsche Welle's Youtube censorship of cogent legitimate but critical points of view. I believe there is a law that they pervertedly interpret that allows DW to do it. Dw is zapping responses pointing out Germany's and Herr Uschinger hypocrisy about sanction loopholes while Germany is buying Russian old refined products from India.
It's not Russian oil, it's Indian refined ooil product! Sue me.

  5. Failure of Europe to adequately support its own defense gives Trump his talking points against continuing US NATO participation and support for Ukraine.

  6. A smart person would call for everyone to come to negotiations table, everyone old white person is talking war while 2 generations of men die

  7. Russia🇷🇺 must respect soveregnity territorial integrity of Ukraine, Georgia, Japan. Israel🇮🇱 must respect soveregnity territorial integrity of Palestine & Syria.

  9. Options to end the war are limited where Ukraine ends up with their territory including Crimea and the Donbas. NATO need to trust Ukraine will comply with international law and only attack military support in Russia. My view is NATO needs to step up to get Putin at a negotiation table. Yes this may still be a compromise between Russia and Ukraine, But I see no other option that reduces the loss of lives and allows countries to start rebuilding their economies.

  10. 9:47 agree. You also do not get to have full sovereignty over your own security decisions as long as we are the ones paying for those decisions.

  11. When I was young I thought old people are intelligent till I grow up. Long missile means WW3. Dont these guys get it. F16 could not do anything what makes you think long range will do something .

  12. As an EU citizen….. I want out of EU 😂😂😂😂😂😂

AND… the general population is not woting for movie actor slalinsky.

    😂😂😂😂😂

  13. The USA has done such harm to its arms sales now due to veto. UK can’t have USA having veto on our national security up until now I was in favour of buying F35 and purchasing more but if USA had veto rights on when and how we can use them then that’s a hard NO we have to now develope our own weapons systems including Stealth fighter bombers. Now this I think was a strategic mistake by Biden and his national security advisor.

  14. If Germany is still not meeting the 2% of GDP for their military, then maybe Germany should begin following in the footsteps of Poland. Poland is now spending around 5% (or more) on their military expenditures. Germany will sit idly by until the Putin’s bombs drop on their territory—then it’ll be too late.

  15. Western leaders should have made it clear on day one that Ukraine can do whatever it wants with the weapons supplied, as long as it is within international law. All the red lines drawn by the US have only helped Putin by giving him too much political ammo.

  16. Romans killed 2/3 of people in Germany Italy France and Spain and allegedly renamed the land Gaul and necromanced every dead body too I read in the book “not in his image” by John lamb lash so I looked it up and it was on the internet too

  17. Biden is acting as a such coward during all this time. Chancellor Sholtz is worst, but realized that his policy must changed. Ukraine needs free desition to use whatever they need to stopped Russia attacking it's cities, bases, transportation, headquarters

  18. Agree 100% with this proposal. Armaments are no different than any trade commodity. To soothe western consciences, by all means place restrictions on sticking to international rules of war (even though Putin has no such reservations). The Ukrainians are not the nut bars in Moscow. Their military planners are interested in handicapping Russian military capabilities, not forcing Russian civilians to go without crucial infrastructure.
Lift the range restrictions USA, GERMANY, UK….!all NATO MEMBERS.

  19. Germany stop worrying about the US and deliver unrestricted Taurus to Ukraine! From Putin's threats NATO should be enacting article 5 as a clear message to Putin!

  20. Restrictions? Only thing Putin knows is doing certain things may trigger Biden to actually do something drastic before he forgets again what is going on. Beyond this, Putin knows no restrictions on what he does. Remember this when restrictions are put on Ukraine. Remember this when you look at what is needed to defend Germany. We don't really know what Harris will do if she gets into office, but hopefully more and more competently than Biden. She is a former prosecutor after all and Trump is already on the run from her, refusing to debate her again. In the end securing Europe is going to need strong European leadership.
