  1. That boils my piss

Hope they throw the book at this backwards prick

  2. What a cunt. I also greatly disapprove of the chance to buy your way out of a conviction. He shouldn’t go to jail or anything just be found guilty, on the record and fined.

  3. Seize a portion of his land and convert it to an environmental sanctuary, set a precedent. Absolutely abhorrent behaviour needs to be met with real, measurable action that will impact his livlihood so this is never done again by him or others. We’re talking about trees and river ways that have been part of the ecosystem as long as he has, if not longer. Disgraceful human being, I wouldn’t spit on him for fear of wasting water

  4. They should have their farms confiscated and use that land for reforestation.

  5. He knew that at 70 no judge was sending him to prison.

  6. Knew someone that did something vaguely like this – cut down trees bordering his property but not strictly on it.

Ended up paying a huge fine, having to replace the trees, and having to pay for a fence until the trees were tall enough to replace it.

  7. Confiscation of the land, cost of replanting and repair costed to him. A fine just makes it legal if you can afford it.

  8. “They included the knocking down and uprooting of 250 mature and semi-mature trees and the removal of 3.7 hectares of vegetation, scrub and trees combined.”

He should be made donate the same amount of agricultural land to forestry as the amount he destroyed.

  9. Sickening stuff, should be met with justice of equal proportions, but the profit margins of farmers are protected over the environment in this country. Throw the book at them, set a precedent. Alas, they won’t.

Maybe we should start terrorising the farmers? Throw plant grenades, of protected flora, onto their land during the winter and watch them grow in the spring to mess with them.

  10. This is going on in Kippure Estate, wicklow. Very old mature oak trees esp.
Been cut down and cleared to build houses with no planning permission….
That beats it…and also sewage flowing into river liffey.
F all been done about it.

  11. Without sanction, the ‘charitable donation’ and ‘fine’ are just a cost for this cunt to ‘improve his land’.

  12. The article doesn’t say but was this land he owned or was it commonage? Presume it’s a much bigger deal if it’s the latter

  13. Knew of a farmer who levelled a large ring fort. State took him to court, and he said he wasn’t aware it was one. Judge copped on and told him I believe you are lying, I advise you to change your plea to guilty. Which he did and got a fine of 35k or something like that. Farmer didn’t bat a financial eyelid.

  14. From the article:
The court heard that the actions of the accused also led to the destruction of an aquatic habitat in a natural watercourse environment known to support salmonids and the destruction of a river habitat for a distance of 350m.

  15. That is a lot of work that cost a lot of money and he is “to consider if he is in a position to make a sizeable donation”? he could afford to fucking cut it down handy enough the prick.

  16. Theres a €10,000 limit to the fine that can be imposed. I petition that in that case, he should have a separate trial for each of the 250 trees.

  17. There is nothing protecting woodlands here! It’s shocking. A huge native woodland near me is a about 2 years away from getting flattened by a quarry next door. A small piece is a proposed NHA, I sent more maps of areas and they got added to a list of possible ones to add to a list of proposed NHA’s. I think there are 700 sites awaiting. Its criminal how little we care.

  18. The €10,000 isn’t a fine, it’s an investment for this pig ignorant fucker.

Take the hit now and make more from the land over the years.

  19. Jesus, if all the bad news I’ve read today this is the one that’s made me most cross. What a prickstain.

  20. As an aside, the National Parks and Wildlife Service never previously had the resources to pursue cases like this. It would have been swept under the carpet.

Over the last four years, Malcolm Noonan of the Green Party has substantially strengthened and funded the NPWS, and established a wildlife crime unit. As a result, people committing crimes like this will have their day in court, and we’ll establish a clear deterrent for anyone considering similar acts.

  21. Can we stop pretending that modern farmers give a flying fuck about the environment? The judge expressed his astonishment “given that the accused works as a farmer, “lives by the seasons” and understands the natural environment”. But modern farming is about yield and damn all else. They’ll use up the land and when some climate change catastrophe strikes they’ll be out with the begging bowl while also trying to stymie any environmental legislation. All this while keeping the public onside by burnishing some romantic image of farming of yesteryear.

  22. They were native trees. Disgusting behaviour, and I hope he faces very serious consequences above and well beyond a fine.

  23. This is bananas. He should have the book thrown at him but he won’t because he’s a farmer and it’s his land 🤬

  24. I hope he walks on Lego for the rest of his days. W*.*ker.

  25. Custodians of the land.

If action is being taken on this, I’ve a couple to report.

  26. I grew up in an area of Meath that had great big oak trees lining the local road. Unfortunately the local farmer who was selling his land decided to make a few quick bucks by chopping every single one down (this was back in the late 80s).
The sad thing is that some of the older locals still refer to the road leading up to the church and school as the wood.

  27. What kind of trees though?

    Indigenous or Sitka spruce? 🤔
