It’s sad because, along with the covering over of the Zenne and canal docks much later, it’s one of the principal reasons why so little is left of ancient Brussels. Of course, Grand’Place as depicted here was fully and gloriously rebuilt but elsewhere there are only a few bits and pieces to remind us of medieval Brussels.
Sometimes I wonder if, had there been more of that heritage left to us, the city authorities might have been stricter about urbanism and architectural “experimentation” in the 20th century. But then again, when we look at other cities in Belgium, possibly not.
