  1. Anything to be said for another vape or charity shop?

  2. For commercial leases the ‘upwards only’ clause did not help…

  3. What a wonderful idea it’s been running councils on commercial street rates. Definitely doesn’t kill small business and low intensity activity before it can develop.

  4. I get Donegal, Sligo Mayo etc being on the poor list but why is Galway in the Red. Big enough spot, industry, motorways to Dublin and Limerick. Weird one.

  5. Our local village introduced parking charges about 4 years ago. Lots of shops have closed since then. People just aren’t interested in going into the town for a browse or to meet up for a coffee etc when they have to pay to park.
Now maybe the shops were on the way out anyway, but there are definitely less people just going into the town now.

  6. Should convert a load of these places into apartments over the shops and maybe there would be a need to have the shops open again.

  7. I have a place in dublin I want to rent for the last 7 years, the price is mad, the place is empty at least for the last 15 years (google maps pics) , they want a astronomical sum of money for a 30m2 shop. The shop will still be empty the next 15 years I think.

And then if you find a place, you get killed with taxes and fees.

irish government only like big companies, they don’t want their population pumping the local economy.

  8. They have destroyed the place……….on purpose!

  9. They really need schemes to encourage digital nomads to move here

  10. Take the beauticians ,hairdressers/barbers and charity shops out of Skibbereen and there’s not much left…….

  11. commercial rates, big business competition, retail parks etc

  12. We ran a business in our local village a few years ago and this was what we discovered when trying to find a premises;

    – One old Landlord doesn’t want any business that could create “a smell” but also it doesn’t have running water anymore.
    – One building where the landlord would only rent all 4 units in one go, not one smaller one at a time. It’s been vacant for ~8+ years now.
    – 2 units that nobody knows who owns but somebody knows it has no power and a leaky roof.
    – Another unit the landlord looking way above market value.

To me there appears to be lots of people just sitting on empty premises that are just speculating waiting to be bought by someone richer.

They don’t want the hassle of unit running and just price it beyond reach of a small (legitimate) business to keep it vacant.

  13. Unless rents start coming down I don’t think shops will be able to complete with online stores really. Rates probably also need to be looked at.

  14. It doesn’t help that large retail parks are often put a distance outside towns as well, so it often draws a lot of business away from town centres that may have limited options.
