Brexit red tape on British businesses has caused goods trade between the UK and EU to slump and the problem is getting worse, a study has warned.
Many smaller UK producers have given up exporting small amounts to the EU after facing more rules and regulations, a report by Aston University Business School found.
Between 2021 and 2023, the study found UK goods exports to the EU fell 27% and imported goods by 32% compared with what it predicts would have happened without Brexit.
So why isn’t this brexit ‘disaster’ being born out in economic figures, where the UK seems to be doing better than many EU countries right now?
> UK goods exports to the EU fell 27% and imported goods by 32%
Given that manufacturing PMI is very much positive, it seems like the UK is just making more of its own stuff.
>Between 2021 and 2023, the study found UK goods exports to the EU fell 27% and imported goods by 32% compared with what it predicts would have happened without Brexit.
So despite the [UK not introducing border checks ](https://www.politico.eu/article/uk-brexit-border-checks-delay-eu-imports-food-prices-food-safety-fruits-vegetables/)the EU exports to UK fell by 32% ? I assume this is because UK is now replacing goods (import substitution) that were once bought from within the EU, so goods are either being produced in the UK or UK is buying these from RoW (perhaps owing to tariffs that were in place when UK was part of the Single market). Since UK imports more from EU than it exports to the EU, this 32% fall in EU exports is going to have a bigger £/€ value than the 27% drop in UK exports to EU £/€ value.
>The report does not include the service sector, which has performed better than many experts had expected since Brexit.
I remember there was lot of noise that services like financial services, insurance, legal services just to name a few would be severely impacted after Brexit, but doesn’t seem to have been the case, despite the loss of passporting rights for financial services.
At this rate it might even get so bad we start feeling it. Assuming the experts are right.
I feel bad for the non-crazy brits that are now impacted by this idiotic decision.
The russian gift that keeps on giving.^(/s)
“Brexit deal impact ‘worsening'”
So the **deal**’s impact is worsening. Not Brexit’s impact. Good to know.
Brexit good, deal bad.
Imagine being a random Brit that opposed that Brexit stupidity, now suffering together hand in hand with all the Brexit supporters … what a shait!
Isn’t that what you voted for though?
Well the Brits got what they asked for, and now they act like cry babies.
come back to EU? We even promise, we will pretent nothing happened. Its not like we have something to brag about it.
Apes together strong
The ironic thing is that if the UK remained in the union they could have greatly increased their farming exports, over the past 10 years a lot of fruits/vegetables previously not cultivated in the UK started beind adopted by farmer thanks to the rising temperatures in the South of England. They shoot themselves in the foot right when they were ready to increase their exports.
Oh no, who could have ever seen this coming. #projectfear
I used to buy from British online shops. Did it once after Brexit and it was a hassle. It is easier to buy from aliexpress nowdays
Thanks Boris Johnson.
/pretends to be shocked
The BBC even allowed comments on the article, they clearly have a disdain for Brexit and wish it didn’t exist and are probably trying to show that the people (in the comments) hate Brexit aswell. This is probably stupid to say but I wish keir starmer just said fuck it and reversed Brexit as an integrity change for the “future, prosperity and good of the country to lay groundworks for future generations to come”. Or something stupid like that. There should be a huge publicized “Brexit report” that shows that Brexit has had basically no benefit for the UK and on the flip side has a crazy amount of downsides. He should just reverse brexit and ignore the gammons, like seriously just ignore what the meatheads have to say, this is for the integrity of the country, or at least don’t be a pussy and have a 2nd referendum vote, which should be proven needed due to opinion polling.
Brexit issues are rarely purely a matter of Brexit itself.
The shameful shamble that was the Brexit campaign and Brexit politics following the debate tends to be the actual reason.
Brexiters refused to engage on any actual issues. Instead, they insisted they were fake issue, had easy solution or somesuch. Farage declared that “UK would threaten to stop buying German cars” and all negotiation issues vis-a-vis the EU would be instantly settled in UK’s favour.
EU negotiated strategically. UK negotiated during peak UK populism. Most populist moment, government & leadership in generations. Technocrats were marched naked through the streets, Unella rang the bell. No details were considered. No bad news was delivered.
This wasn’t very British, if you compare to UK politics most of the time.
IMO UK was “scared straight” by the fuel supply crisis in 2021… but most of the big decisions had already been made… mostly by default.
Securing small and medium producers’ access into a larger neighbouring market…. the Brexit mindset was a very bad fit for this job.
Brexit is best argument against direct democracy and self governing aka Anarchism
Leave decisions to average joe and they will shoot themselves in the foot over and over, even probability of genocide and systematic lynching of immigrants would be high.
But nah anarchists on Reddit are like children thinking it is ultimate utopia and heaven on earth that will solve all our problems lmao. It will surely turn racists into wholesome, morons into sages… it’s extremely deranged worldview to hold.
Average people aren’t fit or have time to govern themselves, they are sometimes not even able to elect sane representatives let alone double down in this direction for direct self governance. Democracy is an ongoing test and a first step. You can’t jump straight to self governance if aforementioned barely works.
The fact that Hammond and Cameron was so stupid to not even add a 2/3rd majority requirement for the Brexit referendum still baffles me.
All people believing these pro Europe articles should really open their eyes and see what europe is doing right now to all the countries in it.
What a major cockup Brexit was .
