A “concerted campaign” of intimidation against East Belfast GAA has been branded “utterly depressing” by a local councillor.
Police are currently at the scene of a security alert following the discovery of a suspicious object at playing fields in the Church Road area of east Belfast.

It is the home of East Belfast GAA where there have been numerous security alerts since the club was formed in 2020.

The PSNI said Church Road has been closed between Manse Road and Marlborough Heights and members of the public are advised to avoid the area at this time.

Green Party councillor Brian Smyth said it’s “utterly depressing" that there is a “concerted campaign” against the club by a person or group of people.

“It’s having a massive impact on the area,” he said, “there’s an integrated school and an integrated nursery and people that live around there. It is hugely disruptive.

He explained that the council is planning on increasing security measures by installing CCTV cameras and increased lighting.

“I’m hopeful that when it happens it will put an end to this.

“The club has every right to stay there, this is up at Henry Jones and out of the way, not slap bang in the middle of the Newtownards Road. It’s literally at the top of a very windy hill in the Castlereagh area.

“A lot of people back the club and the CCTV is planned for this month so we hope it will now end it for good.”

    It’s not named the “Bobby Sands memorial park”, and is I believe known for being cross-community. I don’t care for gaa the same way I don’t care for basketball, but when they have a chance to take ownership of something why are they ruining it.

  7. There is a primary school opposite. If the threat isn’t dealt with by 8am, and it’s a big responsibility to give the all clear in the dark, the school won’t be able to open.

    It’s a disgrace.

  8. Club should install their own CCTV for a start.

    Eventually the morons  will get back to their drugs now winter is closing in. 

  10. Loyalism will become increasingly hostile towards everyone and everything not related to themselves but it should be understood that this is out of desperation. They have lost Northern Ireland and now for them it’s a battle of maintaining what control they have left and even that will be reduced to scraps all in due course.

    How do you explain this to an 8yo and an 11yo?

    We should be done with this, this should not be happening 26 years after the GFA ffs.
