  1. Why the f…can’t the NHL do the same. Apathy because it’s your team. I say bullshit to that!

  2. World wide sport competitions especially the olympics, are important for dictators for various reasons:

    1) It brings legitimacy to their regime/government. If the state is allowed to be represented, it means the state is legitimate along with any other actions (such as SMOs) that they have done.

    2) It brings morale to people back in the original country. Think of athletes as the superior form of the average citizen. When they see athletes defeating people from other countries, it boosts morale. So much so that russia state sponsors doping their athletes.

    3) National unity

This is more significant for dictatorship countries such as russia as it brings prestige to their country when they’re only known for terrorism and as the global gas station.

Russia also time their invasions if they can, right after olympic competitions for these reasons.

    Example of these are:

*Russian invasion of Georgia (August 2008, same with Beijing olympics)

*Russian invasion of Crimea on February 14 (they timed to do the invasion days after the end of 2014 Sochi Olympics. Of course there are other factors but you get the point)

It’s so important to them that they care more about the olympics than not killing civilians of other countries

Tldr: Putler cries on his bed whenever russia doesn’t get to partake in sport competitions. This hurts his ego and his public support more than what people realize. It’s not petty. There’s political implications for it.

  3. Why would they drop the ban NOW? Are they saying that the invasion is no longer an issue? Are they going to apologize for the period of time during which the ban was in place? What’s the logic?

  4. These organizations have such short memories (when taking money from Russia).

  5. I both agree with the political stance here, but don’t understand. Hasn’t Nepo been competing under the fide flag for a few years now? What’s the point of banning countries if their citizens can still compete. I know Ian has spoken out against the war and stuff, but it seems these bans have easy loopholes.

  6. Fuck em. Any good Russian ihas a Putin price tag on their head. Take back your country or at least don’t represent it.
