The sago crisis in Indonesia | DW Documentary
Children are particularly affected by large-scale deforestation in Indonesia. The indigenous people are suffering.
For centuries, the people of South Papua have observed a healthy tradition. Several times a day they ate sago, a starch extracted from native palm trees. Sago is one of their main staples, but it is becoming increasingly difficult to get: forests are being cut down as a source of green energy. And this has consequences: indigenous people are suffering from malnutrition and children have stunted growth. This is because the rice preferred by the government isn’t a good alternative for the indigenous communities. A report by Rizki Nugraha.

Seems like they need large-scale sago processing factories.
Indonesia has a very bad reputation when it comes to how it treats indigenous populations unfortunately.
You're pronouncing "Sago" wrong. 🤡
Is this the same sago balls that are inside a mango sago pudding? Didn't know it came from a trees core.
Semua kerusakan alam di Indonesia bukanlah oleh masyarakat tetapi kolaborasi perusahaan besar dengan pemerintah. Contohnya pembukaan lahan perkebunan dengan mengabaikan hak rakyat sipil penduduk lokal
Black campaign part of west drama to push third country to step back in development.
On the other channel … Indonesian commented saying Malaysian is always racist. But on the other hand… This video clearly showing how racist Indonesian are.
😂😂😂😂😂
Free Palestine!
The current Indonesian government is very greedy and corrupt. They ignore the welfare of the people in order to gain wealth for themselves and their groups. The greed of the current government is very large and structured…… they are very disgusting
Deforestation is a disaster for Indonesia and the world.
So sad this is happening to my other Indonesia brothers and sisters. The rich conglomerat and corrupt government in Jakarta are to blame! They only care about theirselves not others.
Capitalism and "civilization" will kill us all. We have no right to be involved in their changes but companies do not care
06:19: what the hack?? listrik murah dibandingkan dengan keberlangsungan alam? biodiversity Papua? pemerintah pusat hanya mengharap gampang dan melepaskan tanggung jawabnya untuk mengurisi urusan rakyat, semua di serahkan k swasta. Wahai pemerintah, kalian dipilh rakyat untuk mengurusi urusan pokok (sandang, pangan, papan) kami tanpa memandang orang asli atau bukan asli Papua, tanpa harus mengorbankan alam dan lingkungan u masa depan.
Welcome to papua Indonesia
Papua People is amazing
Even the doctor sounds racist
This is because of greedy zombie businessman & greedy zombie government. Not only forest on the island of Papua, including Bali island, Kalimantan Island, sumatera island, etc.
Sago is no more nutritious than rice. Am i missing something? How could the entire premise of this documentary be so flawed? And ultraprocessed foods have led to obesity around the world.. instant noodles are very calorie dense. Now I'm truly confused.
The problem is not sago vs rice obviously. The talking point masks major factors causing the ill nutrition.
The last minute segment seems showing the real problem that elders in the community is resisting change in exchange of something I cannot figure out. Maybe power or prestige.
The Indonesians are to blame. They shouldn't blame the indeginous population.
Basically, they're raping this rich land 😭
The problem seems real but the quality of this piece is questionable. It does not do adequate investigation and analysis. One sentence can summarize up: indigenous people wants sago only not rice ; if not young people will not get enough nutrition in a traditional way. Or simply Tradition triumph change and science.
Lets be serious for a second, indonesia does much much worse stuff to Papua.
Simply said they clearly colonized the iland and steal the indigenous people recources and lead an active war of ethnical cleasing against them.
Bear in mind West Papua is land colonized by the Indonesian state, where efforts for equality and curbing exploitation are met with state violence and genocide , and these malnutrition problems are largely caused by Indonesians and the Indonesian government exploiting Papuan land, as per the video. The racism towards Papuans found in the clinics? Commonplace across all of Indonesia. The Indonesian healthcare worker said, racist and narrow-minded, that Papuans "only think of what to eat today". What she fails to mention is the ongoing cultural genocide against the Papuan people by the Indonesian state, the forced (violent) assimilation away from traditional ways of life and livelihoods, and the limited options Papuans have in the face of this oppression. Free West Papua.
Exploitation of nature in Indonesia is massively and ruin the ecosystem.
Thats the government fault .
West papua is not part of Indonesia…. do i need to spell that in capitals…. my heart beats for a people and a land that always was and always will be Papua's birth place
We have to lay down most industrie and just money-jobs!!
Worldwide!!
People here think oh if we do it ""there""" will not effect us so they do jobs and work all Life down..
Aim very sorry with youall indigenes upon Earth…
Ai hope you overlive!! What white people industrie do to you…prayers with youall
Its miss leading to say its a crisis in Indonesia when its Papua New Guinea…. Indonesians dont eat Sago but they love cutting the trees down and killing the people endemic to that spiritual land 😢❤
Welcome to mulyono regime
so basically it's indonesian corrupt politicians and bureaucrats that cause these kind of things, but don't make these as another bad optics campaign so west papua can be used and syphon off it natural resources like timor leste by foreign countries
Robinson Karen Hernandez Paul Lopez Charles
Capitalism is the cause of most human suffering,in this case deforestation to sell wood & more agricultural land and it is and will be the cause extinction of other animals and plants species entirely
They look like my own people in Western Province on the Papua New Guinea side of the border. This is so heartbreaking 😢
imagine telling yourself that you are making a good cause for the people to make yourself feel better, but you just caused the kids die due malnutrition and hurt all the local people…
meanwhile the president's son eating $40 sandwich and brag about it…
Billionaires. Exploitation of forests, Exploitation, of Resources, Exploitation, of People Thanks. ELITES. WOW very intelligent people this ELITES… Romania,we saved Roşia Montana,,from This Corporation 💰💰💰💰💰
Discrimination, but who does it?
This 'documentary' is beyond stupid. How dare the Indonesian govt provides access to easily available rice and food items to Papuans, these people should only be allowed to eat difficult to produce sago harvested from trees. When will DW produce 'documentary' condemning Germans for developing agriculture instead of sticking to original Germanic hunter gatherer lifestyle.
❤
film propaganda eropa
In hunter-gatherer societies, everything is fine as long as the population does not exceed a certain threshold and allows for a natural renewal of food sources. These people do not plant anything and only harvest natural resources. The introduction of basic medicine has broken this fragile balance. Can we blame the authorities for building dispensaries and their consequences, namely a larger population? When the forest is no longer sufficient, what should we do, let them die?
Crisis Sago but overwhelmed rice is better,so papuan people are able to replace the better meal.
Wah uni eropa sedang berbicara propoganda👏👏
Dunia sudah melihat apa yang sedang terjadi di Gaza 👏👏
