8. My grandfather volunteered to fight in WW2 so that he couldn't be drafted. He was able to become a cook in the Navy and so didn't have to assault some Japanese controlled island or German position. Seems like a good deal to me. 👍

12. In the Navy we said "Choose your Rate, chose your fate." In this instance, it means if these guys get to choose their specialty and unit, they can have more control how things turn out and IMHO improve their motivation to join.

Ukraine has both … draft or you can pick a certain brigade and specialty in their own unit recruiting office and bypass the draft commission … for change, those who go own unity drafting office get up 4 months of intensive unit training plus 2 months in the third company or reserve company to get addition training … This is old Soviet tradition that first/second companies have the best soldiers/equipment (first has the best of everything, a little worse equipment and personal but still combat ready go to a second company) and third was used as spare parts collection place/damaged equipment storage while fixing and not fully trained soldier reserve(extreme cases)/training unit. The Draft problem is still because a lot of Ukrainians do not trust the current government due to corruption issues in all fields, especially military supply … West knows it as well and tries to persuade the government to start dealing with corruption … but right now with 0 results … Funny thing is that Russia right now deals with corruption better by removing and put charges against old Shoigu team members who were notorious with that …

15. In my mind I would think Ukrainian women would be signing up for the war in droves. Your almost guaranteed not to be put near the front line. For your own country fear of a Russian soldiers might do if your captured. And your fighting for your men. I know not all are suited for combat, im not. But there are hundreds of roles to play.

28. When i was serving as conscript in Ukraine (before war), after a year I was comissioned to serve in the military prosecutor office. They were letting you live at home and come to the office each morning. One day, as i exited my home, a small minivan pulled in front of me. Guy came out and after short conversation, he realized that i was already busified (voluntarily), so he left. Through my conscripted service, there was so many people just pulled out of groceries, streets, barbershops, anywhere. And almost always it was done in really wrong way, when people were single supporters of their families or sick relatives. Thats all is quite wrong, and even if there's a necessity like war, it shouldn't be tolerated. There should be high financial incentives driving recruitment affairs and not this. Military guys should really push for raising the salary plank, bringing this issue to the public and pushing government and society. This job is heavily underpaid, and getting satisfied with just proudness and mission does not feel nice, especially if you consider that you protect national capital and wealth.
