Gran Sasso literally translates as Large Stone/Big Stone.
fun fact: under the gran sasso is situated the biggeet underground laboratory in the world
The Etna is higher at 3357 metres.
Finally, a picture that isn’t about the fucking Alps!
I can’t be the only one underwhelmed by this?
Gran Sasso rocks.
cool, I had no idea that the appenins were that high and imposing looking.
Always looking for places to go hiking in Europe so that is going on my list, after the Picos de Europa.
I’ve been at the top! It’s quite the hike (1100m of elevation gain), but it was amazing, and the view from up there is awesome.
Btw, it would be more correct to say that it’s the highest mountain of the Appennines
Very beautiful mountain. I’ve was in the area in September, while visiting Santo Stephano, Calascio and Castel del Monte. Really impressive bit of mountain…almost ominous…and moreso now that I know there is a lab beneath it.
It is also very close to the sea. You can ski while seeing the sea
