Dear Reddit Norway,

I'm researching options for building or renovating a house on a plot of land in rural Southern Norway (specifically in Buskerud, Innlandet, Vestland, Telemark, or Agder). I'm looking for a location 1-2 hours away from major cities and within 30 minutes of a local store or town—like this house in Koppang.

For this project, I'm considering two main approaches:

  1. Purchasing a plot of land with existing building permits and constructing a house based on the concept I have in mind (see attached screenshots).
  2. Buying a plot with an existing house that I could either renovate to match my vision (adding additional rooms) or demolish entirely to build from the ground up.

I'm aiming for a plot of land that is at least 4,000 m² to accommodate a vegetable garden and potentially some animals in the future. Ideally, I'd like to be close to mountains and possibly a lake.

With this plan in mind, I would greatly appreciate your assistance in answering the following questions:

  1. Cost and Timeline: What would the estimated cost of such a project be, and how long would it typically take in terms of construction, permits, and other requirements?
  2. Regulations: How difficult is it to navigate the regulations and rules associated with building or renovating in this area?
  3. Finn.no Tips: When browsing listings on Finn.no, what specific things should I pay attention to?
  4. Self-Building: Is it feasible to undertake the construction myself, or would I need to hire licensed electricians or plumbers?
  5. Additional Advice: Are there any other tips or considerations that could help me throughout this process?

Thank you in advance for your insights!
