Vienna’s flood defense system explained | DW News
While many central and Eastern European cities have been hard-hit by flooding in recent days, people in Vienna haven’t been spared. But the city is resisting floods better than most. Let’s take a look at the massive flood defense system the city built in the 1970s and 80s.

Don’t blame climate change for weather.
This kind of system will be extremely useful for flood prone countries like Bangladesh
If you take a map where floods happens, you will discover that above this countries is the air planes high way , all air planes wich goes from north europe to asia and vice versa, all fly above thisi countries.
Emissions from aviation are a significant contributor to climate change. Airplanes burn fossil fuel which not only releases CO2 emissions but also has strong warming non-CO2 effects due to nitrogen oxides (NOx), vapour trails and cloud formation triggered by the altitude at which aircraft operate.
Its time to ban this air planes as soon as posible or redirect them to other countries, Ukraine is no fly zone, and now all planes wich goes to north eu are redirected to eastern eu countries!
Good proactive thinking- Similar thinking in Canada, with the creation of a big ditch around Winnipeg to divert water from the Red River which was prone to floods.
The Vienna Flood Protection had two phases. Until 1870 the danube had several arms floating through, whats now vienna (back then it was suburbs). Also the "Wien-Fluss" was in it´s original bed in the souther parts of the city (back then also suburbs). In a massive building-project Vienna was redesigned, part of it was the regulation of the Danube into a straight river-bed and a 450 meter wide plain for flood-events. Also, the Wien-Fluss was dough in a deep river bed.
Although this brought some protection, it was not enought. So in the 1980ies the city build the 2nd regulation, the new danube, where the plain for flood-events was – that´s the project referred in the Video.
Change effect of global warming
Hello, thank you, prevent effect of global warming, New energy from sea will change world soon, minerals and temperature of water and air from sea are huge source of energy, reduce more than 50% using fossil fuel, fresh water, fertilizer(minerals+O2,N2,C), electricity, zero pollution, I invented new method base on designing this machine, it produces 150Megwatt/hour electricity and 20000M3/DAY fresh water and fertilizer, using power magnet of machine as catalyst to separate N2 and O2 from Air , economy will rise by using jet plasma machine that it compresses gas(hot Air) in isolated structure in water pool with more than 80 % efficiency, it has two vertical cylinders, without crankshaft, in first level it transfers compressed gas(hot air) temperature from engine to sea water(hot air + compress's air temperature+ engine heat+ hot sea water) in pool for steam electric generator, steam combines with high cold Air pressure( gas rules) to produce pure water and electricity , there are other source of energy that with international cooperation in coastline we can reduce effect of global warming, further more we can prevent these phenomena like cyclone and flood and wildfire , earthquake and ocean water level by using this hot seasonal atmospheric condition, recent years in summer, geothermal energy happens in surface of coastline, there are many countries in coastline with seasonal hot weather and water condition in comparison with middle Ocean, its more than 12 degrees ,this differences must decrease, in sum-up, by using this energy not only is economical but also reduce global warming in countries like Japan, China, India, Mediterranean countries, Iran, Brazil, Mexico, Us, Canada, (Africa and Arabian countries….) . I invented new method base on air pressure rules and quantum physics ionization sea water minerals in strong dynamic permanent magnet(SMCO) with special frequency(1500or 3000)/minute bases on paramagnetic and diamagnetic particles and electrical microwave electron wave field and electric chemical reactions and photon wave from semiconductors with special angle Cations like(K+, Mg++, Na+, H+, H++, li+, H2, ..) are transferred to in the second level into up level by vacuum pump from storage into combustion chambers and they combine with O2 and N2 ,… as major part of fuel, they increase speed of machine, modern induct Gearbox to control speed of opposite direction, in the end point, dynamic magnet significantly reduces by air compressed, it is controlled and stopped by maglev force and spring and hydraulic jack and opposite force from second cylinder, for producing electricity and fresh water (removed minerals by accelerate ionization system from sea water) and fertilizer. Increasing amount of ionization minerals in magnet field despond on how many electrolyzes uses.
producing pure water and fertilizer haven't any cost by jet plasma machine. 7 methods zero pollution for reducing global warming I mentioned in my profile. it optimizes with AI programs (G20 countries can solve these phenomena like injury and death, billions of US$ in global warming damages).
what exactly was explained, this edit was a joke?
😊 0:32 Mexiko Kirche ⛪️ Wien 2. Leopoldstadt 🌏🇪🇺🇦🇹
das problem ist nicht das hochwasser sondern dass es das grundwasser hochdrückt und dann alle keller und u-bahn tunnel volllaufen und der strom ausfällt

They're Lying Again.
THERE IS NO GLOBAL WARMING, AND CLIMATE CHANGE IS NORMAL.
The Earth has a life of its own too..!! IT'S ALLOWED TO FLUCTUATE TEMPS IN PERIODS OF CENTURIES.
Bratislava is 10 times better protected and lies below Vienna, and the Morava River also flows into the Danube in front of Bratislava.
The solution is to make 6 km inflatable mountains and spray the top of the mountain with water and all the water will turn into snow because of where the mountains are located in Africa it causes drought because it blocks the clouds that make rain
I find it interesting: For decades nobody was interrested in this system (New Danube). People were calling it a waste of money. Now suddenly everybody is.
The danube island is a large recreation area free to use for everyone and with hardly any commercial facilities on it. It and all the danube riversides as a whole are good places for cycling.
Vienna calling
This is not the only water protection Vienna has. There are also quite high flood walls along the Donau. Then there is also the Alte Donau and Lobau, that can contain a lot of water. The thing is to expand the drainage from Donau in any way possible (and try to be nice to the folks living down stream). As a Swede living in Vienna for some ten years now, I am impressed. The waterflow that Vienna can handle is insane – and I do not think they are finished yet, with all the new knowledge from the last decades.
Danube island is full of pumpkins, washed ashore as the waters recede. A reminder of the devastation that happened upstream

0:50 The "Ancient Route" was built 1870-1875.
I am proud to be Viennese!🇦🇹
0:50 It's in fact not the ancient root. The highest curved, now 100% still, arm ist it, but with many side arms. The Danube was artificially straightened in the late 19th century
lol. climate change risk.
Don't underestimate the Wien river. The flow rate increases thousand-fold when it rains and almost reaches a quarter of the (average) Danube.
That's why there is a huge detention basin in Auhof.
1:21 – As a Viennese, I have to object: sheep do not “graze here alongside city-dwellers out for relaxation”, because here in Vienna, we people have developed a cuisine much more appealing than grass growing between two river-banks.
On a more serious note, I remember how older people told me about the political hick-hack back in the 1960ies, “too expensive“, “no real need”, the usual. Now we are really glad we have this system. Also, even without consideration of flood-prevention, this area is famous for the annual “Donauinselfest”, a multi-day music festival, which is a big and welcomed source of revenue for the city. For all the architectural sins committed in Vienna, the Neue Donau is certainly not one of them.
Wien hält Hochwasser bis zu einer Durchflussmenge von 14 000m3 /sec beim Wehr in Korneuburg aus.
Wir hatten die letzten Tage 10 000m3 sec
Also da geht schon noch einiges
At 0:15 you see the OLD DANUBE. That’s two underground stations away from the NEW DANUBE. Greetings from an original Viennese ❤️
I'm a Donauinsulaner😊
Yes, the system of the New Danube is good and Vienna resisted the flooding well. BUT the pictures you show are not from the New Danube they are from the Old Danube which is basically a lake, because it has no connection to the actual Danube anymore. Also many towns just outside of Vienna got hit very badly, like St. Pölten almost completely was flooded. People got evacuated also some died in the floods.
W Vienna, I only spent one night there on a layover but from what I could see and feel this is a beatiful city with great food, music/arts, beatiful people, great infrastructure and flood protection. Well done!
this is not danube's ancient root. it's the new danube which was build over 100 years ago. befor that danube was completly unregulated and wild.
the danube island gives me the notwendige time to think about my future, to grow up to and become a famous tattoo artist one day!
Wien geilste
The channel the danube flows through normally is not ancient at all.
With the danube in vienna nothing is ancient. Without human intervention the river moved a lot, it wriggled heavealy which defined the regions characteristics.
The danube was straightened under the monarchy with a massive overflow flatland right next to it. That was then again modified in the 70s into the main stream(danube) the overflow stream (new danube) and the island.
Nothing about how the danube flows through vienna is in any way ancient
It's not only flood prevention. In summer the new Danube is like a gigantic and long lake, providing a 2x 21 kilometer Beach for everybody for free. Also: The biggest open air festival in Europe, the "Danube-island-festival" takes places every June on the island between the Danube and the new Danube. And it's also for free haha I love Vienna besides that, the Danube island is also designed like 21kilometer park, providing green spaces all across the city
better than the germans. 😁
0:50 This is not the Danube's ancient route. It was already regulated in the 1800s (that's why it's so straight), causing many of the problems we had to fix in the 20th century.
