‘Gisèle Pelicot a symbol for the world in shifting shame onto perpetrators’, expert says

“I am a rapist,” said a Frenchman accused of drugging his wife so that he and dozens of strangers could sexually assault her, his first testimony in a trial that has horrified France. For in-depth analysis and a deeper perspective on gender violence and sexual assault, FRANCE 24’s Mark Owen is joined by Dr Ummni Khan, Associate Professor in the Department of Law and Legal Studies at Carleton University. Dr. Khan researches the socio-legal construction of deviant sexuality and addresses the self-serving myths that perpetrators use to justify their actions. She says that Gisele Pelicot has become a symbol for the world in shifting shame onto the perpetrators.

  1. cowards hiding their faces..justice must force the unveiling of these pervert monsters. France is the sexual abuse leader on the planet.

  2. The mayor practically supported rape. Makes you wonder if he's one of the 30 escaped. Funny how 30 got away when he took meticulous records with videos.

  3. I remember watching a show about Gerald Marie the boss of elite model agency that was accused of rape of young models, a coworker called him out on it he said we men have or urges we have are needs French prosecutors closed the investigation due to statute of limitations. Well of course they did

  4. These are the kinds of things that are happening to girls and women. There are men in America right now that are denying that anything bad is happening to women under Republican politics. Republicans want the infant and maternal mortality data since the overturning of Roe v Wade to be held until after the November 5 election. Needless to say maternal mortality rates are up. In France, it is unspeakable what happened to this woman. It is unspeakable what is happening to Muslim women in the Middle East. It is unspeakable what is happening with abuse, rape, assault, and violence to all women by men in this world. Why doesn’t anyone care about women in this world?

  5. The dude is just a deviant and has poor impulse control. Drugging his wife is the worst part. He made his own wife – the woman he professed to love – vulnerable and exploited her. She is going to have massive trust issues for the rest of her life. At least she has the support of her friends, family and the community. I hope they know that standing by her is the best thing they can do.

  6. I love how the court tried to hold this in camera to “protect” the victim – no, it was solely to protect the men. They aren’t even man enough to show their faces.

  7. I have wanted to write Giselle Pelico for a long time. I was so absorbed by the amount of injustice, violence and violence against women that at first I did not listen to your story carefully, and then I put it aside, ashamed of my inattention. The story is so tragic that I do not know how to approach it. The number of people who are ready to be involved in a crime and violence against another person, a woman, and even in an unconscious state, is amazing. Until I was 30, I lived from Harry Potter to Lord of the Rings and only when strangers came into my life with their lives, I began to grow up, then the war and soon there will be no trace left of my naivety. Stories like yours make women and all people with a conscience look at the world without illusions and perhaps this awareness will help someone avoid a similar situation. Hold on … I wish you patience and strength to survive this.

  8. We will NEVER care about the perpetrators past. They knew what they were doing when committing their crimes. The husband’s defense is beyond pathetic.

  9. The interviewer is right there is no resonance of 'right' to rape in their minds. This interviewer is the best I have heard so far, thank you for your objections. Gisele is lucky to be alive. professor really has not understanding of choices and how the power of the mind. This is incredibly deep psychology they were delving into their darkest fantasies and he gave them and himself permission. I am psychotherapist and I know he had a choice. No matter what happened to him during his younger years he could have dealt with it by going to therapy yes it would take a long time, but he chose to act like this. All the men also chose to join in, they became part of this 'dark tribal behaviour' and for those years he was in 'control' of his wife, his daughter and the men. He really is worse than an animal as are the all the men. Let's not make excuses they all had choices and chose the 'route of evil'.

  10. Do you recall the case of the Austrian Fritzl, who built a prison for his daughter, who, after years of s.a. by him, having run away and brought back "home" by police, was turning 18 and could habe legally left… he locked her up in there for decades and she bore 5 kids who grew up in that cellar with her…
That is the logical bad end of patriarchy, and the reason I really can't find those alpha males funny.

  11. If only one of the man would have honor, they would have informed the Police but most of them (two apparently turned down, but still didn't inform the Police) said yes.

  12. 1:52 I am not French, yet as a woman, this resonates strongly with me. I believe you underestimate the resonance of this crime, as well as this abject proof of the banality of evil, and its excusors and enablers.

  13. 6:00 Traumatized people may scream, bleed, and feel tremendous pain, but to use that as an excuse to hold a perpetual party over defiling another is insulting, at least to this particular trauma survivor. Traumatized people are often disbelieved because they may regress or manifest behaviors that others cannot readily understand, especially without history. Abusers only exploit others for that particular payoff. The payoff was male bonding over humiliating a woman as an object. This seems so obvious, its incredible to me that so many DON'T seem to get it, or the dynamics.

  14. The statement that not long ago husbands were legally allowed to rape their wives, reminded me of a case in the late 1990s where a Swedish man raped his Singaporean wife while she was in a coma. He was caught when Hospital staff noticed her pregnancy. The Swedish courts ruled in his favour, stating it was within his rights to have sex with a comatosed woman.

  15. Once again, men have no lives outside of disrespecting women and trying to impress men they dont even know. Its why they never have the energy to become decent people, barable partners, functioning parents or satisfying lovers.

  16. no one has told the story of what that creepy husband was doing the first 40 years of their marriage? The case deals with the past 10 years.
