I'm curious to learn from our french speaking citizens if the sentiment is changing around NVA. It looks very likely that Bart De Wever will become first minister. Not so long ago I've seen a reportage where he was generally seen as 'the devil'.
The article attached made me chuckle for two reasons, the first obvious one is the typo, the second one on the content (he apparently doesn't look very engaged to become prime minister, eventhough he is the formateur). So please tell me – especially people living in Walonia – how you feel about Bart/NVA and if the sentiment towards him is changing or not in your circles (why or why not)?

  1. I’m a leftist from Liège. It’s an euphemism to say I’m not a big fan. (Same level as glb).

  2. French speakers in general don’t know very much at all about Bart De Wever or N-VA. Their understanding of him and his party is that he is right-wing and doesn’t like Walloons and immigrants. N-VA is perceived as an extremist party, there’s little difference in a francophone’s mind between N-VA and Vlaams Belang.

  3. RTL ?? Alors , ce sont des bruxellois francophones , pas des wallons . Et puis , son but c’est l’indépendance de la Flandre , rien d’autre …

  4. A racist and finger-pointing separatist. Why would people have a different view of him now just because he’s gotten this ungrateful task?

If anything, the changing view is on people in Flanders doing mental gymnastics when they break out their “NVA isn’t racist, trust me bro” arguments only to the second whine about how there are too many Muslims and Arabs in our country.

  5. I think we can find a lot of common ground over fiscal policy. I’d like him a lot more if he stopped regionalizing only the stuff that costs more in Wallonia while keeping the stuff that costs more in Flanders federal.

  6. As a French (from France) living in Brussels I am still not as much into Belgian politics and I am witnessing from the side the whole Flanders v Wallonia tensions.

I don’t mind that Belgium gets a PM from Flanders (and I like the current one) but it would be difficult for me to have favourable views towards a far-right PM. I would value more moderate, liberal and pro-EU politicians.

At least the whole compromise culture here offers some kind of checks and balances, so I am hoping his government would not bring radical changes.
