Ireland combats crack and cocaine | DW Documentary

Cocaine and crack cocaine are spreading across Ireland—and not just in the capital Dublin, but in more rural areas as well. How did this happen, and what is being done to combat it?

International drug smugglers are increasingly setting their sights on Ireland. According to a report by the U.S. State Department, the western Irish coast is regarded as a gateway to Europe. The police, coastguard, navy and customs officials are struggling to secure the fjords and bays, which are difficult to control. People are already referring to County Cork as the Cocaine Coast. The powdery drug can be bought almost everywhere—even in the countryside and small villages. And an increasing number of Irish residents are battling addiction. A report by Killian Bayer.

  1. I don't believe this documentary. It's all lies. This country wags its finger at other countries bragging about its freedoms, high morals, and democracy so how can this place be so screwed up? I don't believe it.

  2. lies, uk isnt the easy way anymore . you start with Darndale the bad part! talk about D4 posh heads ,Thrinty ,ucd, dcu. your picking off the bottom. judges, politics and posh schools have the bigger issues . dont agree what your doing.

  3. This literally reminds me of what happened to the African American community. Beginning in the 70’s and raging into the 90’s. My mother and father were addicts for years. It destroyed our family. So, seeing the beautiful people of Ireland go through this is relatable and sad all at once.

  4. Let's face facts the biggest drug problem in Ireland is not cocaine it's the alcohol addiction. No other drug wrecks so many lives in Republic of Ireland as alcohol does. It accounts for most murders and causes huge mental health issues. Just picking one small area like Darndale is just typical of portraying these areas as places of no hope and a way of showcasing what can happen to estates if 'drugs take hold.' And yet the most addictive drug of all, alcohol, is seen as not part of the problem by the Government. Cocaine use goes hand in hand with alcohol. Cocaine use is at it's highest at weekends when many people are socialising and driving alcohol. Millions of Euros are wasted on anti-drug campaigns specifically directed at cocaine and other A Class drugs but nothing is done to curb alcohol use which is the real killer as it causes so much more damage to the individual and society. Type 2 Diabetes, Liver disease, Breast cancer, Brain and cognitive disorders, the list goes on.

  6. I work 50hours a week I train i train 5 times a week, I dress nice I have a nice home

But I take cocaine twice a week , it’s a choice to do anything in life

  7. The Church has to get into the streets. Like Fr John Franciscian Manchester n later working among the lost by Waterloo Bridge Londons east end.

  8. The Gardai don't care about coke, they are too busy going after cannabis users. Its much easier! Besides, every Garda I know is into their coke. It doesn't stay in the bloodstream as long so its their drug of choice!

  9. I think people have accepted coke too easily into the party scene. It's impossible to source it ethically and it's a hard drug. If it were looked at similarly to heroin or meth, it wouldn't be as widespread or casually used.

  10. Before i even watch this i can tell what the comments will be all about. Lets just say the war on drugs has failed us. We need to better around drug education and mental health support

  11. 1.5 tonnes (1.7 short tons) of cocaine valued at €440 million washed up on the Cork coast near Mizen Head in 2023. Wonder how much this might have impacted the current Cocaine and Crack issue in Ireland? Nowhere does it state if all of this 1.5 tonnes was recovered

  12. Lack of opportunities and sometime people’s will lead to try drug and alcohol abuse! Government should focus on rehab institutions- there are not many!

  13. Who afford does not bother and who bothers can not afford ! Terrorists are not Terrors ! It's the Money Extortionists ! From where : 1) Society 2) County 3) Business 4) Subsidy 5) Regions 6) Government 7) Relatives

  14. I am not expert. But I wouldn’t describe the situation as a drug issue. I think it’s rather a cultural problem.Government doesn’t have something more interesting to do to offer.
Beatles? Were they taking drugs? All of the successful people who were taking drugs are successful because they are talented, and those who are losers- are losers because they were taking drugs?

  15. I studied in Galway between 2019-2020, and I was shocked when 16-17 years old irish lads offered me cocaine whom I met randomly at the city center- Spanish Arch side
