Democracy under threat? The rise of the far-right in Germany | DW Documentary

Support for the far-right is growing in Germany, raising fears of a new 1933 – the year Adolf Hitler came to power. Does the recent electoral success of the far-right Alternative for Germany party indicate the country’s democracy is under threat?

In the eastern state of Thuringia, the extreme right has become the strongest force in the state parliament for the first time in post-war history. The development has triggered comparisons to the rise of Hitler – it was in Thuringia that the Nazis first entered a regional government, just three years before Hitler took power nationwide.

Some Germans are concerned that democracy is hanging in the balance. Hundreds of thousands of people are now taking to the streets regularly to voice their support for democracy and take a stand against right-wing extremism. But is the Germany of 2024 really comparable to that of 1933?

This documentary explores parallels between then and now, and also looks at other events that took place in Germany in the 1980s and 1990s. Back then, neo-Nazis wanted to make the small town of Langen in Hesse the first “foreigner-free” town in Germany. After German reunification in 1990, right-wing extremist groups also became increasingly influential in East Germany. Is the AfD’s election success a further step in the growth of the far-right in Germany and a threat to democracy?

  1. hypocrite west , if bjp do anything in favour of hindus , then they were like india Democracy is in Danger , hindu Extremist govt , but what about christian Extremist of europe ? what about jihadi in all over world ??

  2. Qatari government donate most far left liberal colleges in western europe,,which is teaching kids lgbtq and propaganda…they are destroying this nations from inside..

  3. But then why is it always the far left (socialists, always, in some shape manner or fashion) who are ALWAYS at fault for destroying actual democracies?

  4. Democracy is a system of government where power is held by the people, typically through elected representatives. If the majority votes for a far-right party, does it stop being a democracy? Or is democracy only when far-left parties are in power in the country?

  5. Radical Islamist theology is dangerous for german existence…woke DW want to destroy Germany in the hand of this radical Islamist terrorism

  6. The far right has risen because of the liberals and idealistic leftist policies. If you contained the inflow of refugees as it went beyond the economic and social welfare capacity of the country or atleast ensured proper cultural assimilation without regard for political correctness- you wouldn’t have this crisis today. You liberals created the Far Right. You’re a part of the problem!

  7. To be fair the number of foreigners in Germany is crazy large so native Germans will obviously have a problem with that

  8. Democratic concept of Freedom Liberty ,Right to Life and Property was shattered when wicked nefarious elements were allowed to comit crimes and walk away without getting punished.

Insult was added to injury when native citizens were suppressed while trying to speak about their concerns and worries on many matters

  9. If majority support far right what's your problem?
Then why far left isn't a problem?
According to you far left also should be a problem.

  10. The worst human rights violation since the Third Riech i Germany is by far that was conducted by all covidiots. The german society went crazy all in, well a bit milder than during the 30:ties but still crazy enough. The pharma industry does not care about human lives, only about profit. And the US blew up north stream, stabbing the german people (and much of europe) in the back with a HUGE knife.

  11. You must be mentally sick if u think that being right wing is equal to a nazi, when lefties parties all across europe are hard pushing their censorship and u guys talking about democracy.. ffs what a sad joke

  12. Germany for Germans.
I am foreign i don't live in Germany, but Germany needs European immigrants who are civilized, not others from the Middle East and Africa that live in 1300.

Remember, there is no democracy in the world, but false democracy.

  13. DW, this docu is An example of leftist propaganda. You don't explain why AFD wins elections, but you immediately turn to equaling to 1933. Why do People vote against the 'normal' parties? Right, because they don't do what they are expected to do. So DW is a part of the problem and not An objective media outlet

  14. You can see in every video clip, the average IQ and generic makeup of the average AFD Wähler. The idea those people call anyone „undeserving“ or „degenerate“ is an absolute joke, they themselves are literally scraping the bottom of the genepool. In turn, pro democracy voters are articulate, smart and look absolutely normal.

Fascism is so clearly a mental illness, one brought on by brain damage, inbreeding, or whatever else makes your brain soft.

  15. 1930s -> war burdens and debt 2020s -> reckless refugees and asylum seekers

The difference between these two? the latter can be prevented by institutional measures. Violence and racist actions aren't tolerable though, the leader should have walked the line between humanitarian support and citizen's freedom to live in peace.

  16. Hitler and Nazism are part of German culture…they were representing German culture.
You can not change culture..just like that.

  17. This is sure a scary thing for Germany & the rest of the world. Hate just spreads way too fast for the world to stop.
