It sadly seems thats the way our politicians are taking us
I don’t know who these confused journalists think they’re helping.
Until it’s made clear that for the Western Balkans EU progress depends on the actions of their governments, not the EU, the accession of the region will continue to stagnate and even backslide.
Just like it happened between Slovenia-Croatia, Greece-Macedonia and is happening between Bulgaria-Macedonia, whichever of the remaining countries get in first (be it Serbia, Bosnia, Macedonia) it will use the veto right to please its own nationalist narrative and the others will simply not bow down. Cypriot greeks have been blackmailing Turkey since more than a decade and I bet EU understood well that importing disputes by accepting countries with territorial disputes in is not a great idea since it politicises the enlargement.
As long as the current EU members don’t make a decision on which way to go forward and stick with it, there’s no sense in enlargement. Me for one, I wouldn’t mind to have the nation states largely dissolve into the EU. Then again, I’m Belgian so I’m used to different cultures within the same state.
