Fight against illegal fishing | DW Documentary

One in five fish consumed worldwide is the product of illegal fishing. Fifteen years after completing an initial investigation, a team of journalists returns. Their goal? To investigate the practice today, and find out who these fishing pirates are.

The film follows members of the environmental organization FishAct on a dangerous search for clues in Tunisia. Here, illegal fishing boats snatch catches from local fishing crews and destroy sensitive seagrass meadows as they trawl coastal waters. At local fish markets, illegally caught shrimp receive documentation for export, ultimately ending up on Europe’s dinner plates as a supposedly legal product. According to environmental organizations, illegal fishing still accounts for 26 million tons of produce per year.

How are these fishing pirates still being allowed to exploit the world’s oceans? The filmmakers look for answers in the Mediterranean, US, EU and Australia, talking to officials, activists and experts.

  1. I don't understand how sinking a ship filled with diesel fuel and other chemicals is protecting the sea. Sure, it stops the illegal fishing but your adding a ton of toxins to the very same water.

  2. Extremely upsetting 😢. ABC Australia has a similar one posted 2 yrs ago😢. Paul Watson, the founder of Sea Shepherd has been ousted illegally, the fleet gutted and he has reformed a Paul Watson Foundation ☝️♥️✌️🌍🙏

  3. It was trollers killing off fish stocks that caused the Somali Pirate issue because their government wouldn't do anything to intervene. As a result, they started taking the boats themselves hostage to get money from what they would've normally got from their fishing.

  4. Glad to hear that Australia took such strong action! I'm Australian and am very proud of this action.
Confiscating ships, and all equipment should fund the enforcement, along with fishing licenses.

  5. The blue crabs my beer invasive but they are very nice to eat. You can make money off them if you're smart. Unfortunately fishing piracy exist in every continent around the world. And it's very hard to stop. Technically that is the reason why Somalia pirates are working the way they are. 10 years ago they were fishermen but illegal fishing has destroyed their fishing resources. Core spy the CCP illegal fishermen from China. And now the Somalia fisherman are pirates not for fishing for ships. It makes me laugh I remember 20 years ago the Russians destroy the fishing vessel that was fishing in their Waters in Russia. What a joke Russia is they destroy other countries fishing areas but they don't like when other countries come to their Waters.

  6. I have watched many documentaries on conservation, etc, and have noticed there seems to be a pattern. Why is it that it always seems to be one particular asian country involved in so much illegal activity. They seem to have a finger in everything which is damamaging the future and obviously care very little. Poaching protected species seems to be their idea on how to save themselves not the world. No consequences either to any such organisations as most are run by money and seems in some countries "everyone has a price"

  7. doesnt anyone get it yet? we have engineered our own demise. the planet will survive. humans, probably not. its like a slow moving train wreck. thew issues huge and very diffiult or impossible to stop.

  8. China and Russia….What about African, South American, Arabic,The Sub Continental And Asian Illegitimate Fleets!? Unbelievable 😂😂😂.
Be good be safe, and ciao for now….Blue 😇✋🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿🇬🇧.

  9. I followed whale wars with a pation, Peter has become an amazing leader and a hero for us all to look up to…thanks for all that these guys do for all of us.

  10. You got cheap seafood? He got cheaper seafood. Most, if not ALL problems, can be traced back to capitalism. Food for thought.

  11. I used to be a commercial fisherman myself but I would just do it for license purposes and what happened was so many species of salmon 110 species became extinct so they started having fish farms and making funky artificial fish instead but most of the loss was due to other countries coming over and stealing our fish and not following the fishing regulations overfishing eventually all the fisheries will be extinct when was global warming on top of that the food supply will get short when it comes to natural fish they will all be farm-raised eventually

  12. What about the "legal commercial and sustainable fishing" that is ruining the ecosystem?! The same monopoly that captivates fish and feed them atibiotics which end up also in our plates. No-one mentions that because there is big money involved into it, including politicians and governments. We know for a fact that Norwegian farmed salmon is the most toxic, and EU banned it, however we still find it in the supermarket shelves. This docu is to put attention on "illegal fishing" while hiding the other mafia fishing insdusty.

  13. Any conservation attempts will be futile until there are significant penalties for the greedy jerks. Hefty fines c/w confiscating and then destroying the gear, or lengthy prison sentences.

  14. I have watched so many of these documentaries from all over the world for years, and every one is the same old story of the authorities just sit there and watch and do nothing, WHY?

  15. Don't blame the "pirates." Blame the people who can't stop stuffing their faces with cheap food from questionable sources. As long as there's a mindless market, there will always be those raping the Earth to satisfy it.

  16. If you dont like fish dont eat them , if you dont like meat do not eat it , simples .
This is all Bs, gimme Trump 2024

  17. The only thing you need to do next, is to accept the LORD JESUS CHRIST as your savior. John 3:16 Context

13And no man hath ascended up to heaven, but he that came down from heaven, even the Son of man which is in heaven. 14And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up: 15That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life. 16For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. 18He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. 19And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.

  18. Nice Program very informative Please DW do one for Nordstream 2 when more information is available or we are permitted to hear the truth especially the true environmental costs to marine life in the area

  20. Going onto a sinking ship to get evidence of wrong-doing….that is impressive. You never know when it could start sinking much faster unless you know the ship's insides.
    Kudos to this group.

  21. Relax people. The earth is vastly overed with 80% oceans, lakes and rivers. Many areas and depths have not even been explored. There won't be any shortage with fishes. They are just like humans, no matter how many die off, they will keep on multiplying by the millions

  22. The European Union is the culprit when it comes to West Africa. Paying African countries for fishing rights being exploited by European fishing trawlers. Shame on the European Commission!

  23. The people who think they have authority over other people are the problem. Anyone who tells me I can't fish will find themselves in a potentially lethal situation very quickly
