Germany begins imposing checks on its nine land borders | DW News

Germany has begun imposing tighter controls at all of the country’s borders. The government says the measures will help tackle illegal migration and protect the public from threats such as Islamist extremism. The controls within what is normally a wide area of free movement – the European Schengen zone – will initially last for six months. DW’s Lucia Schulten reports.

  1. I trust that Germany has not taken this step lightly. Germany is a staunch supporter of the EU. Gexit is not a thing.l

  2. i cross the german border twice every single day for work, i have yet to see a single german police officer at the border lol
no doubt it's just a PR thing just to calm the masses after all the horrific things that has happend due to uncontrolled immigration

  3. As a Dutch/German I dont see the issue here! We can still travel quite freely to and from germany. You just can be stopped and checked out that takes like 5 to 10 minutes of your time and than go your marry way.

  4. It's good. All those people scream out "I want to go to Germany". Certain people can not choose. Be happy your in any safe Country. Control those borders before they get out of control.

  5. The thing is, the countries of the EU need to unite for real and do strict EU border controls. If we keep checking each country's borders it will not solve the problem.

  6. Say what you want about Germany now doing this, Poland, of all nations, should not be outraged at Germany doing this, they practically showed the Germans how its done…

  7. just 6 months? A database should be setup and camera should be imposed with facial recognition. The free flow allow illegal immigrant go Europe and stay easily.

  8. Wow, things have changed. Germany lead the EU in denying the UK on any more restrictions to control its' borders, which was just one of reason that gave the UK fodder to leave the EU, too much uncontrolled immigration. What is next, will Germany swing to the right.

  9. Seems totally redundant/all posturing if the EU as a whole doesn’t protect its borders and totally reform asylum and immigration given Merkel’s open invitation.

  10. It’s amazing that some countries have to be at the edge of the cliff to finally act and realize you just can welcome the whole world misery. Now Germany is taking drastic measures, but a little too late….

  11. I’m not surprised and I hope all EU countries start doing the same thing. Going back to original borders would give countries back some power. If the EU doesn’t really care about European countries, I think Europeans do. Good.

  12. No problem with checking. There are laws and enforcing them is normal. But internal Schengen border checks? Rediculous. It's if Nevada is checking it's border with Texas. Concentrate on the EU borders. Startup EES (5 times postponed already). Make sure you have rotating working permits so you do not cut-off legal routes forcing people to come in a non-regular way.

  13. Come on, this is no big deal. The Schengen agreement allows border checks under certain circumstances. And it's not as if we have to queue at border crossings like in the olden days. The flow of traffic is just slowed down slightly to allow police to decided who to stop and check. I was checked at the border entering Germany from Austria last week and all they did was ask me to show my ID and I was on my way again. The whole thing took half a minute. Only those up to no good need to worry about this.

  14. We control borders at the external border, not internal.
But if the EU cannot protect our external border, states have my full support on internal border control.

  15. So first CDU invites literally anyone to Europe and puts pressure on Italy, Hungary, Austria etc. and then demands stricter border controls? xD

  16. Small check points in town of Zittau travelling there regularly, no problem to cross border if you're not travelling illegally. I am glad that they are doing this , a bit late but better now than never
