It has been more than a month since workers are back from their summer holidays and many of us are already itching to get away from our desks. Luxembourg’s only women’s netball team is back in full swing and opening its doors to new players.

Popular in many English-speaking countries, netball is often compared to basketball though it differs in many ways. Two teams of seven compete to shoot the ball into the defender’s goal ring in the period of four 15-minute quarters. Players must only hold the ball for three seconds at any time and dribbling is not allowed. It’s a fairly easy sport to pick up but can take time to master.

In Luxembourg, there is one netball team made up of a group of players of all levels who meet to train every Wednesday evening.

“We are a social club with both experienced and highly competitive players and absolute beginners,” said Ginette Kremer, the club coordinator. “Others have previously played sports like basketball, soccer or volleyball.”

The club is host to a range of nationalities and ages, including players from South Africa, Australia, New Zealand and the United Kingdom.

“Age is pretty irrelevant provided you are interested and motivated,” said Kremer. “Last season our youngest player was 15 and the oldest over 70 – and I don’t think that many clubs can match that.”

The club is open to any woman who wants to continue playing netball or try the sport for the first time and meet new people. In June, the club played matches against teams in Brussels, Antwerp, Amsterdam, Utrecht and Dusseldorf.

“I have pretty much played all my life, so I enjoy sharing my love with others, and enjoy meeting others from different cultures who share this love,” said Kremer.

The team meets from 19:20 to 20:50 every Wednesday at Ecole Privée Fieldgen near Place de Paris in Luxembourg City. Players pay €5 per session and all of the proceeds are donated to disabled children’s charity Schrëtt fir Schrëtt.
