ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) – Winnebago County leaders push for the extension of the half-cent mental health tax referendum Monday evening at a rally.
In 2020, voters approved the sales tax with a sunset clause meaning it would need to be voted for again to continue past 2026.
Leaders say the tax has helped 18,000 residents receive care. Pam Clark Reidenbach, the president and CEO of the Northern Illinois Center for Nonprofit Excellence, says, “It’s more than just a tax – it is the health of our community. What it’s doing is investing in the physical health, the mental health, and the well-being of all people in our community.”
