PBS, the Maltese national broadcaster, has revealed details about the Malta Eurovision Song Contest 2025.

The Malta Eurovision Song Contest 2025 will be used to select the Maltese entry for the Eurovision Song Contest 2025. The song submission window for the contest will be open between November 18 and 29. Some rules for submissions are as follows:

Artists must be Maltese citizens. In case of acts with more than one person, the lead singer must be a Maltese citizen.
The winner of the Malta Eurovision Song Contest 2024, Sarah Bonnici, may not participate in the 2025 contest as a main artist.
Songwriters and composers may be of any nationality.
Artists can participate with multiple songs.
Songs must not have been publicly released or performed before November 30 2024.

Once the song submission window has closed, a jury will evaluate all of the submissions. A total of 24 songs will be chosen to compete across two semi-finals on February 4 and 6. In each semi-final, a combination of jury and public voting will choose eight songs to advance to the final.

The final will take place on February 8 and will feature 16 songs. A combination of jury and public voting will decide the Maltese entry for Basel. All three shows will feature a live audience.

Sarah Bonnici represented Malta at the Eurovision Song Contest 2024 with the song “Loop”. She finished last in the second semi-final with 13 points.

Malta in the Eurovision Song Contest

Malta debuted in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1971 and was represented by Joe Grech and the song “Marija L-Maltija”, which finished last. Malta competed again in 1972 and 1975 but then withdrew until their return in 1991. During the 1990s Malta only once finished outside of the top 10, and in 1998 they came within just 7 points of victory. It was Chiara who brought the country their 3rd place finish in 1998, and who went on to finish in 2nd at the 2005 contest in Kyiv. The only other artist to finish 2nd for Malta is Ira Losco, who was 12 points away from victory in 2002. They are the longest and most successful participating country never to have won the Eurovision Song Contest.
