Ministers set to drop UK ban on foie gras and fur imports

  1. Who even wears fur anymore? The status symbol of it is tarnished and the price ranges far exceed what most people would be willing to pay. Sounds like more Tory back scratching.

  2. > Some – including Brexit opportunities minister Jacob Rees Mogg – have raised concerns about personal choice.
    >
    > The BBC has been told that Mr Rees Mogg believes the government should not be imposing restrictions on consumers.

Exactly Mog, cannabis it’s a personal choice and the government should not be imposing restrictions on its consumers. Public nudity, kicking a swan, peeing on Downing Street. Personal choice.

  3. >Other ministers – including Northern Ireland Secretary Brandon Lewis – raised concerns the measures would not have included Northern Ireland, creating different rules in different parts of the UK.

    >There were concerns over problems relating to the Northern Ireland protocol, the part of the UK’s Brexit deal under which Northern Ireland continues to follow product rules from the EU – where foie gras is traded freely.

So fix the NI protocol that you all negotiated and brought about by bringing in Brexit.

  4. Thank fuck. This must mean the cost of living crisis, the impending war in Ukraine and the flagrant law breaking of the government was fixed yesterday. If importing stuff like this is on the Tory agenda, then life must be approaching normality.

  5. Any reason the headline has been altered from news article?

The UK government is likely to drop plans to ban imports of fur and foie gras, amid cabinet opposition.

Edit: the BBC headline appears to have been written in a way that doesn’t support the text from Nick Eardley, not OP’s fault. The current ban on British produced foie gras isn’t changing, and neither is the import ban on fur unless the provenance of farm/cull can be ascertained, as is the case for a host of products already used – uniforms a good example.

  6. I’ve had and enjoyed foie gras, but it should be banned. Fur is unquestionable, there is nothing good about it.

  7. Concentrating on the key issues I see.

When the masses are struggling to survive the rich need their fur to keep warm.

  8. Hilarious that most of you are probably meat eaters but this is just one step too far you!

Would love to hear the mental gymnastics for this one.

  9. Why is murder illegal it should be personal choice!! …. Sometimes when people unfathomably decide to do disgusting things it should be banned / illegal for the greater good of society

  10. Fur for wraps for their breeding mares. Foie gras because any thought of personal abuse turns the filth on!

  11. Disgusted with this government to allow barbarity back again, Because fur farmers care only about preserving the quality of the fur,
they use slaughter methods that keep the pelts intact but that can
result in extreme suffering for the animals. Small animals may be
crammed into boxes and poisoned with hot, unfiltered engine exhaust from
a truck. Engine exhaust is not always lethal, and some animals wake up
while they are being skinned. Larger animals have clamps attached to or
rods forced into their mouths and rods are forced into their anuses, and
they are painfully electrocuted. Other animals are poisoned with
strychnine, which suffocates them by paralyzing their muscles with
painful, rigid cramps. Gassing, decompression chambers, and
neck-breaking are other common slaughter methods on fur factory farms

  12. I’ve been a vegetarian for nearly 15 years and I’m glad this is being scrapped. To my mind there’s no difference between foie gras and normal meat so the ban just seemed like point scoring

  13. This makes me so angry I want to start stringing these fucking wankers up. How much more do we need to put up with until we break and overthrow these corrupt fuckstains.

  14. Right, so we left the EU and are turning ourselves into the EU?

I’m not much against fur as it is the same thing as leather, with the hair attached but we shouldn’t be importing it.

  15. The vast majority of quality paint brush’s used animal fir products (usurally horse) The best brush’s for my job are squirrel hair, they’ve gone up from £25ish to over £80 a brush it’s ridiculous

  16. Of all the shit they need to spend time on and looking at new laws etc and they chose this! There’s going to be oap, who will chose to not have the heating so they can eat the cheapest food they can find, while the torys reverse a ban on foie gra and fur

  17. Thank God, I was worried this would get delayed by all the energy prices nonsense in the news. Some people have no sense of priorities.

  18. Expect a relaxation of ivory import rules next, followed by a reduction in drawbridge wax and duck-house taxation.

Fucking pathetic excuse for a government.

  19. Personal choice, what a stupid fucking argument. What if I wanna make the personal choice to import ivory and cocaine? Presumably that should also be allowed.

  20. “come on fella’s we aren’t twirling our moustaches enough, pass the brandy”

Top tier villaining on display here.

  21. Given the issue Norway faced having to cull millions of mink due to virus outbreaks I think this sounds like a fantastic idea. What could possibly go wrong?

  22. Our government went full cartoon fucking villain years ago. Nothing surprises either anymore. That’s almost certainly what they want.

  23. Surely even the most die hard unionist on here must be able to see why it’s imperative that Scotland get another vote.

Every day we drift further and further apart.
