RTE be like

  1. To be honest. I know people love to dream about what they could buy if they were millionaires.. but watch last night’s episode and the way 3-4 million was being bandied about as if it was small change was a bit appalling.

The bit where yer wan was saying getting up from your wfh desk and enjoying your free time maybe with a bit of tennis or some horse riding I absolutely lol’d

  2. Just one of those franchise shows probably, most expensive cruise, exclusive hotel or holiday etc.

Nobody wants to see someone selling a two up two down in Tallagh.

  3. More millionaires in Ireland than ever. I don’t get mad when Top gear shows ferraris and lamborghinis that I can never afford its just television

  4. Something that bothers me a lot about RTE is the amount of new content that they show. Look at the TV listings for one day. If you take away news and current affairs they only show around 1.5 or 2 hours of new content on an average day. The rest is all repeats.

  5. Off Topic: was reading on the Origins of the Famine and the Landlord issues… couldn’t shake the feeling of history repeating itself…

  6. What are you whining about. RTE also does that show about ireland cheapest homes, where people explore mouldy rot boxes in Roscommon and pretend they’re not depressing hovels.

  7. The ‘Home of the Year’ last week was a lad who had decided to come back from LA for a holiday, but his family wanted to stay here, so he casually plunged a few million into a new build in Kerry.

I wonder how many variations of ‘here’s something you’ll never own’ they could put together

  8. RTÉ clearly being able to read the room. In fairness RTÉ make content for bible thumping auld ones, who sit at home all day eating cakes. A large portion of the country is not experiencing a housing crisis, they are experiencing a value increase in their investment.

  9. It’s fantasy TV. I do not watch but have no problem with television that’s a bit of escapism. Do you have the same issue watching Top Gear when it’s all about supercars that are many hundreds of thousands euro to buy? What about Love Island where none of these people anyone of you will ever get a chance to hook up with but still watch.

America has a lot of faults but Americans generally aspire to do well and for many they do. Ireland could do with more optimism and I suspect many here on this forum are very young and just starting careers and families but after 20-30 years of working, promotions smart investing will also be buying flash houses and cars in the distant future. Hard to see now when you do not have a pot to p!ss in but please do not give up!

  10. RTÉ are OBSESSED with VIP/ affluence/opulence / ‘celebrities’.
    It’s for their D4 demographic.

For the countey folk there’s GAA and Ear to the ground. And Nothing for anyone in between because they don’t exist to RTÉ

  11. RTE is ran and for out of touch D4 types. Also rife with nepotism within their own circles. Not surprising here.

Best to not pay the TV license. Fuck them.

  12. Used to work in realty/lifestyle TV in the us. I can confirm that shows like these are designed to make you angry. Well the primary goal is to provide an escape, but if you’re someone who doesn’t have money, which their target audience is, it’s like escaping from Alcatraz and winding up in Auschwitz.

  13. I’m not sure what the problem here is? My wife watches this stuff alot. We’re certainly not able to afford anywhere like any of these homes and never will, but she still finds it entertaining.

What do people want, a home show showing the average semi-d ? Why would anyone watch that? We watch these shows because it’s different to what we have, not because it’s the same as what we have…

There’s clearly a demand for this stuff (half my friends watch these shows). They’re locally produced and so not something you’ll get on Netflix etc.., so it’s one of the few shows that’s at least a good use of License fee.

  14. Years ago Channel 4 had “Benefit Street” on tv (for those too young/never saw it; it was a street in Britain with the highest concentration of Dole recipients). It showed an honest depiction of what it’s like to be poor in Britain (the good and the bad). This cause a whole hoopla about was it right or not to show it, was in poverty poor, was it humanising them.

At the same time, Channel 4 was showing stuff like Billion Pound Hotel or Billion Pound Yacht or Posh Pawn. Not one complaint was taking serious. No debate, no scandal, nothing.

It’s extremely telling that the issues of the average person and poorer are moralised and overly sanitised as to be something in need of constant scrutiny, yet how people waste millions are not just praised but aspired to. It’s the same mentality that tells you don’t give homeless people money because they might buy drink or drugs but that people earned that penthouse in Dubai or that nice golden parachute.

  15. RTE is a disgrace of an organisation. It does the governments bidding and now news organisation whether state run or not should do that.

  16. People who freak out about this or think they’re out of touch are, and I hate that I have to use this unironically, ‘snowflakes’

This is taking moaning about nothing to an extreme

  17. RTÉ, The Irish Times and The Irish Independent have a serious fetish for showcasing expensive property.

The properties they fawn over wouldn’t even get any attention in the UK or Europe. It’s odd to me.
