A private health system is preparing to grow its reach in Tarrant County with a $37 million expansion project.

Medical City Fort Worth confirmed it is in the planning stages of an expansion that includes a cardiac catheterization laboratory and four operating rooms. Construction, which is budgeted at $18 million, is set to begin in early 2025.

The Fort Worth hospital operates as a 378-bed facility with emergency services, heart and vascular care, brain and spine services, kidney transplants, orthopedic care, cancer services and bariatric surgeries.

“The expansion will enable Medical City Fort Worth to enhance its capacity for specialized procedures, ensuring the hospital can continue to meet the community’s growing healthcare needs and maintain our high standards of care,” Lizzy Couch, a Medical City Fort Worth spokesperson, said in a statement.

The new laboratory and operating rooms will take up roughly 17,380 square feet within the existing hospital, according to a filing with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation. Global architecture firm HKS Inc. will design the project.

Medical City Fort Worth did not provide additional information about the remaining $19 million of the expansion plans.

The Fort Worth hospital is a branch location for private health system Medical City Healthcare, which operates 21 hospitals across Dallas-Fort Worth. Medical City is operated by the for-profit company HCA Healthcare Inc., which reported nearly $65 billion in revenue in 2023.

In March 2023, the private health system broke ground on a $144 million expansion at Medical City Arlington.

That project will see the addition of over 127,000 square feet of space for 60 additional patient beds, eight private surgery rooms, 12 additional post-anesthesia bays, operating rooms, a central energy plant and a new main lobby. Expansion plans include a patient tower, which will connect to Medical City Women’s Hospital Arlington.
