However, all other counselling offered to children under 18 will be outlawed and adults will have to consent to take part in therapy. The laws will be introduced after a consultation.

LGBT+ campaigners have long called for a ban on gay conversion therapy. Under the practice, religious groups try to “cure” gay people through prayer or counselling. In extreme cases individuals have beeen subjected to violence or “corrective rape”. Judges will be asked to hand down longer sentences for such crimes.

    >The government will also give courts the power to seize the passports of under 18s who are at risk of being taken out of the country. The new Conversion Therapy Protection Orders will work in a similar way to an existing scheme that allows officials to intervene on behalf of children at risk of female genital mutilation or forced marriage.

    >Liz Truss, the equalities minister, said that LGBT+ people deserved to live their lives free from the threat of harm or abuse. “There should be no place for the abhorrent practice of coercive conversion therapy in our society,” she said.

    >The case of Keira Bell, a 24-year-old woman who began taking puberty blockers as a teenager before later detransitioning, is understood to have influenced Truss’s decision to include gender identity counselling in the ban. Bell met Kemi Badenoch, a junior equalities minister, this year.

    >Stephanie Davies-Arai, director of Transgender Trend, a group of parents, professionals and academics troubled by the trend to diagnose children as transgender, said that the new laws could threaten legitimate discussions.

    >She said: “This may have a chilling effect on therapists working with children with gender dysphoria unless there are clear, specific protections built into the bill.” Nancy Kelley, chief executive of Stonewall, welcomed the “huge step forward” on gay conversion therapy but urged the government to go further on prayer and support for victims.

    >“We also can’t support the proposals for people to ‘consent’ to conversion therapy — a practice that is abusive cannot be consented to,” she said.

  5. This is fucking great, and adult influence is the main reason I’m always highly sceptical of younger people who say they identify with anything else than their sex.

    Edit: now that we’re on the subject, extra proactivity on, for example, social media should also be regulated. A child should be proactive in deciding things like these, and should not be asked to make a choice like this whatsoever.

  7. Why isn’t this in my country already??? We’ve got a ton of cases of forced gender changes (from the child’s preference to the default two) and sexuality repression that go undetected every year

  10. We are going to see a crazy amount of suicides, once transgenderism goes out of fashion and the kids realize that the damage the drugs and hormones did to their bodies is permanent.

    Unlike the Punks of the 80s they will not have the luxury of simply going to the hairdresser and buying a new wardrobe.

  16. This article wilfully distorts the content of the law. As others have pointed out and as government officials have confirmed to LGBT organizations, **this law actually would ban conversion therapy**. I.e.: the law would make it illegal to try to make a trans kid believe that they are the gender they were assigned at birth.

  20. Good. Just like conversion therapy should not be allowed, neither should be the opposite. It is too easy to manipulate kids at a vulnerable and experimental age into taking a decision they will permanently regret.

  21. Does this cut both ways?

    If a child says “I’m gender X” but they were born “Gender Z” does the parent get in trouble for saying “No you are gender Z”?

    Or is it only for changes from assigned birth gender?

    Nobody is running around trying to convince young children that they’re gay or trans.

  32. I think this is a really good thing. There a certainly people who suffer from gender dysphoria but a lot of the recent trends also suggest a big element of social contagion. The explosion of transitioning amongst teenage girls is especially concerning.

    Compassion for the genuinely afflicted shouldn’t create a pipeline where awkward, confused or gay children are medicalised and irreversibly damaged at an age where they don’t even appreciate the consequences of their choices for their health and ability to have children.

  34. It is wrong to push someone to think they are transgender in the same way its wrong to think they’re not transgender.
