  1. ” My people are going to learn the principles of democracy the dictates of truth and the teachings of science. Superstition must go. Let them worship as they will, every man can follow his own conscience provided it does not interfere with sane reason or bid him act against the liberty of his fellow men. ” M.K. Ataturk

  2. I admire Ataturk because he was a nationalist who fought for the independence of his country, and he worked hard to expand the economy and industry.

However, I want to ask others here, do you like Ataturk because of his secularist policies? And if so, is it because you are inclined view Islam as being backwards or oppositional to Western culture?

I find a few admire him on that basis, and I find it a bit frustrating because they ignore all the things that demonstrated he was a great man. Their appreciation is contingent on his policies matching their own biases.

  3. Happy Independence Day, from Greece!

Greek general and later WWII leader Ioannis Metaxas, who was against going to war against Turkey in 1919, talking to a Greek general after they asked him to contribute to the war so that they can win, and refusing by saying:

    > *”The Turks has proved that they don’t only have a religious zeal, but a patriotic one too. And they mean to fight for their independence and their freedom, just like us, for the same things we fight for. It’s about a people struggling for their existance. Such a people will always find someone to lead them. Their eventual loss of Smyrna and futher Anatolian inland will be perceived by them as a loss of their land and the collapse of their fatherland”*

Ioannis Metaxas again after Kemal Ataturk’s death:

    > *”Greece, which has the highest estimation of the renowned leader, heroic soldier, and enlightened creator of Turkey. We will never forget that President Atatürk was the true founder of the Greco-Turkish alliance based on a framework of common ideals and peaceful cooperation. He developed ties of friendship between the two nations which it would be unthinkable to dissolve. Greece will guard its fervent memories of this great man, who determined an unalterable future path for the noble Turkish nation”*

As a liberal, I don’t like Kemalism and Ataturk one bit and I can go into great detail about how his ideas and the cult of personality around his face still troubles Turkey. But I admire Turkish patriotism and with them all the best. I hope one day their nationhood breaks the spell of Ataturk’s cult of personality and move on to progress like they deserve as a hard working people.

  4. Mustafa Kemal Atatürk would roll on his grave if he saw what that islamist dictator shithead Erdogan has done to his country.

  5. Mustafa Kemal Atatürk envisioned Turkey as a modern European-aligned country and people. People of R/Europe should celebrate this man, he embodied European values and ideals. Perhaps if his life wasn’t cut short, he may have had more time to implement his designs and we would have a better Turkey today.

  6. It was also the day Ataturk betrayed us Kurds, and tried to destroy my people by denying our existence, forbidding our language, displacing us, changing our Kurdish names to Turkish, changing Kurdish cities names to Turkish etc. etc. The day that marked the beginning of a genocide is always a day to celebrate, right?

  7. Why do Europeans have such a boner for Atatürk? Yes he was a man that saved turkey from western powers BUT he was a dictator himself. You all hate erdogan (justified) for being a autocrat but celebrate a man who was a dictator?

  8. Congrats Turkey! Happy birthday. Please keep your democracy in place, don’t let Erdoğan ruin your country further.

  9. this day symbolizes a gigantic FUCK YOU to all those who seeked to wipe us off the history. Let this be a message to descendants of those who tried and those who are still trying. We are one of the great nations on earth. No matter how many times we fall, we will rise again. We have been here for a thousand years and we aren’t going anywhere.

COPE MOTHER FUCKERS. Long live Republic. Long live Turkish Nation.
