Koksijds mayor Marc Vanden Bussche feels passed over. “It is ludicrous to decide this in a back room. We are the shrimp municipality par excellence. Our horse fishermen have been recognized by Unesco as a World Heritage Site. Those shrimp are also used in croquettes. But the fishing boats in Zeebrugge and Nieuwpoort also catch these shrimps. You can eat good shrimp croquettes everywhere on the coast. Even in Brussels, delicious shrimp croquettes are sold.
Vanden Bussche believes that the Ostend shrimp croquette should become a Flemish shrimp croquette. “Just like, for example, stew or chicory with ham, that is actually a Flemish or Belgian dish. It’s about using the good fresh North Sea shrimp, which is the basis of everything. It’s the caviar of the North Sea,” he concludes.
What weirdness is that? The also have those everywhere in the Netherlands so….
2 nations are fighting with each other and here we are in Belgium, argueing over a croquette
That seems awfully pretentious form Ostend…
> Net zoals bijvoorbeeld stoverij of witloof met hesp is dat eigenlijk een Vlaams of Belgisch gerecht.
Isn’t this rather French/Spanish.
Yeah, it is a generic coast or even generic Belgian food item, rather than specifically for Ostend.
This isn’t la regional dish like “boules Liègoise” nor a city-specific food like”Gentse neuzen” or “Lokerse paardenworst”. I don’t think anyone ever associated a single city with a shrimp croquet or with a shrimp croquet dish.
Heck, for the longest time I didn’t even knew this was a typical Belgian dish, as I (mistakenly) thought it was pretty generic for Europe.
