  1. TLDR coffee break summary

During his state visit to South Korea, Polish President Andrzej Duda announced that Poland had declined Ukraine’s request to transfer weapons purchased from South Korea. He emphasised that these arms were intended solely for Poland’s defence. Duda clarified that even if South Korea approved a transfer, it would not involve any of Poland’s existing stockpile.

South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol suggested that an arms supply to Ukraine could be considered, depending on the military relations between Russia and North Korea. Poland has entered into significant defence contracts with South Korea, which include agreements for tanks, howitzers, and rocket systems. These deals aim to bolster Poland’s military capabilities amid the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

  2. There’s a huge debate about Poland–Ukraine relations in Poland at the moment, with pretty much everyone from left to right here being absolutely fed up with the way Kyiv government handles diplomacy. At this point I really start to wonder whether Ukraine making demands that they know will be turned down isn’t part of the plan actually, and if it’s so that’s going to be a miscalculation with huge consequences.

We absolutely must support Ukrainian military, people who are defending their country from an illegal and barbaric invasion, and stand in solidarity with the people of Ukraine: there has never been any doubt about that in Poland and we never even thought about using any help as a bargaining chip. But the way Ukrainian government handles foreign politics veers towards absurdity.

  3. >There is no scenario under consideration in which we hand over weapons, which we have recently purchased for billions of (Polish) zloty from the pockets of our taxpayers, to anyone. These weapons are to serve the security and defense of Polans.

This sounds like a perfectly valid position. While defending Ukraine is a high priority, defending your own country will always be a higher priority.

  4. I get that Ukraine/Zelensky is basically “cold-calling” anywhere and everywhere for weapons but it’s just not productive for Ukraine/Zelensky to be asking for somethings that’s just never going to happen. You could ask your buddy to borrow 5€, maybe you could even ask your rich trust fund friend for 5000€ but you can’t ask someone whose yearly salary is 50000€ to borrow/give 5000€. You are making your friend say “no” and make your friend question whether you are thinking straight when you should know your friend doesn’t have spare 5000€ under a mattress.

  5. The Ukrainian government are such a obnoxious assholes, they should be glad that Russia is even worse.

Poland shouldn’t be pressured to give them brand new weapons, they bought for their military.

  6. If you actually read the article, you’d see that their decision is perfectly justified and only has to be explained to the ignorant sock puppet farm employees.

  7. It is fair to ask and it’s fair to reject the request. Certainly I wish the west was willing or able to provide more, and more quickly.

  8. This makes sense. This said, considering that NK is sending weapons and troops right now to Russia, which means that for the next few years they won’t have the resources to have a war with SK, it would make sense for SK to send weapons which reach the end of their shelf life to Ukraine.

  9. I think it would be better if Poland talked with the South Koreans about the S. Koreans sending arms directly to Ukraine, especially now with North Korean soldiers supposedly being used to bolster Russia’s front-line troops.

I am sure we could promise more purchases from S. Korea in exchange for them sending arms to Ukraine…

  10. I remember all the Redditors becoming super mad because Germany wouldnt give up all their tanks and artillery….

  11. TLDR: Ukraine has requested weapons bought by Polish Government from Polish taxpayers money to protect Polish borders. Poland has declined to do it. End of story.

  12. Ukraine’s request for S.Korean weapons is a bit off, although i understand their desperation and need for more weapon systems and should it be done so in other means possible.

It is simply absurd to ask for brand new weapons which needs Korean government’s approval before Poland, and those new systems still haven’t been fielded in enough quantity yet in Poland. Military aids to Ukraine are either retired systems allies no longer operate(like M2A2 in the U.S army depots and F-16A MLU from Denmark), or surplus that do not really affect national security of the doner.

  13. im sorry but with ukrainian diplomacy towards Poland, poeple here in Poland started to get annoyed as hell just as me, fuck ukrainian politics who use Poland only as military road and nothing else, they didnt apologise for rocket that killed Poles, they didnt even mentioned Poland in their ‘victory plan’ guess who is between France,Germany and Ukraine? its like they expect us to agree to everything and this piss me off so much and other Poles too.

Then we have a situation where zelesky is mad at Poland becase Polish politics said they wont let Ukraine join Eu if they wont fix their porlem with nazi bandera ( bandera is national here there, the guy who cimmited genecide od 100k+ Poles , bebys, women and men, he also worked with nazis)

now you see, Poland helped a lot, 300+ tanks, jets, armored venihles, we even pay for starlink, and send electricy to Ukraine at this moment, we even pay to cost of sending ammo to Ukraine ( everybody send their ammo to Poland then they are send to Ukraine)

fk this, and fuck ukraine reta*ed diplomacy against Poland, fk them

i still want Ukraine to win but dont expect us to help you when you spit in our face

god, this is pissing me off

  14. Are polish soldier already trained on this equipment? In case of a direct delivery from S.Korea the Ukrainians could be introduced in Poland into using those.

    Edit: Typo

  15. In 5 years Poland will need to use those against Ukrainian conscripts of Russian army, so that’s understandable.

  16. There’s no Ukraine soon, so Poles can confront Russian troops. That’s the karma.

  17. Sometimes I think that all Ukrainian population have to move out from Ukraine to the West and make Russia some other problem.

  18. We’ve given the most aid, yet they demand more and exclude us from talks with Germany and France.

While I understand their situation, they’re unrealistic about aid and planning when it comes to foreign policy.

  19. “Honey wake up! Another post on r/europe that allows us to be anti-polish and talk shit about Poland.” 🥱

  20. Ain’t Poland then ONLY country that have sent not spare weapons from deposit but from line units?

Staying with thankless tank brigades and so on. Korean armaments Poland received till now are still only replacements. Some units are still without weaponry.

  21. Misleading headline

    Should be

“Poland declined to give Ukraine weapons Poland had already bought from South Korea.”

Ukraine can still get weapons from South Korea, Poland has nothing to do with that…

  22. Okay I think I need to tell you something.

“Poland has delivered 325 tanks and 14 fighter jets to Ukraine since the start of the full-scale invasion, the Permanent Representation of Poland to the EU [reported](https://twitter.com/PLPermRepEU/status/1656562945936044032) on May 11.

A total of 575 tanks have been delivered to Ukraine so far from all partners, according to the diplomatic office.

Poland takes the lead in tank contributions with 325, followed by the Netherlands with 85, Germany with 80, and the United States with 76.

In addition, Ukraine has received a total of 28 fighter jets, including 14 Soviet-era MiG-29s from Poland.”

We gave hell a lot of equipment. Especially at the start of the war when Germany was sending helmets and most of the west was sitting idle. Plenty of that equipment was taken from our active formations. We are currently outgunned are we have to be sure that we are safe in the first place before we spare more equipment to Ukraine. Also Ukrainian diplomacy does everything in its power to loose support from the normal polish citizen. I personally was packing humanitarian aid for the Ukrainians.

I still support helping Ukraine but the way that we were treated by Zelenski is just unjustifiable and poles consider Ukrainian government as externally unthankful. For a two years especially, I was actively protecting Ukraine when some people were saying that we were sparing too much. After Zelenski said in UN that Poland is ally to Russia, I thought we are done. And plenty of poles think that as well.

So sorry guys I will not have any of this clickbait.

  23. So Poland would prefer fighting later instead of now 😯
