Britons in the EU to be stripped of pre-Brexit rights

  1. Left the Uk in 1997 – been a resident in EU countries since then – children born in EU – trilingual – and our lives should be destroyed because of bigots, racists, and lying bastards in parliament?

  2. > An Irish advocate general at the European court said on Thursday that British nationals “who enjoyed the benefits of union citizenship do not retain those advantages following the UK’s withdrawal from the EU”.

    Which doesn’t seem very controversial.

CityAM is a bizarrely pro-Brexit financial rag in London, fwiw.

  3. > Britons in the EU to be stripped of pre-Brexit rights

Pro brexit people: What did you think was going to happen then?

  4. I can’t see why anyone would ever think this wasn’t going to happen.

They’ll have the same rights as everyone else who *also isn’t in the EU*.

  5. I think this is quite disappointing, my wife and I both have settled status in the UK through the EU settlement scheme. The UK has been great through it all, it’s disappointing to see the EU not reciprocating.

Also people on here seem particularly churlish.

  6. Remember the EU is the pro citizen rights one…

Meanwhile in the UK those with settled status can vote and stand in local elections.

  7. Yeah? And? Wasn’t this what the pro-Brexiters wanted? Leave the EU? Well there you got it. I don’t understand why this is news?

  8. The politician in charge of ‘brexit opportunities’ is trying to reintroduce the imperial system and seems to wear a top hat and monocle in about a 1/3 of the photos I’ve seen of him. I’m sure he’ll see this as a big win while everyone who will actually be affected by it can’t do anything about it.

  9. UK government treat its own citizens worse than EU citizens. UK need to do what they promised and return UK citizens back to the national franchise like they promised in 2010.

  10. The headline is completely misleading. Britons have already lost their rights.

A British person living in France has made an argument that because she can no longer vote in the EU nor the UK, she has lost rights protected under the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights. She wants to fight that in court.

There are also other issues that people want to be clarified. For example EU treaties don’t say EU citizenship can be removed. And they argue EU citizenship is conferred by the EU to individuals, not via the member state.

  11. Is this just about voting and candidacy rights? Because speaking as one of those Brits I just assumed I would be losing those rights anyway. I was honestly pretty surprised when I got sent a poll card for a local election earlier this month.

  12. That person is rather delusional. She thought she should have the right to vote in EU and local elections as a non-EU citizen? And even be elected? Why on earth?

  13. I am a UK citizen living in the EU (for 8 years now) with Dutch residency.

What exactly does this mean for me?

I cannot vote in local elections anymore, or I can’t work (therefore live) here?

  14. Good thing that thanks to Putin, this is the best time for the UK to rejoin the EU. Kill two birds with one stone, without loosing face.

  15. That’s kind of how it works at the moment anyway, you’re not allowed to move around Europe as a Brit to other EU countries like you could before
