The Swedish Research Council stopped funding new international development projects in 2023

Sweden is likely to lose competence in international development as a result of the government halting research grants in the field last year, the Swedish Research Council has warned.

The council had been funding development research with funds from the development aid budget for 11 years. But in June 2023, the government ended that mandate and the responsible committee is now only permitted to manage ongoing projects until the final grants are paid out in 2026. The government pulled the plug because it wanted to direct more support towards Ukraine.
