Today marks the 360th anniversary of the #RoyalMarines. Established in 1664, the Royal Marines have remained steadfast over their 360-year history thanks to the Commando mindset and commitment to their values and standards. Per Mare, Per Terram.

Super-liminal?
I’ll show you.
Hey, you! Join the Navy!
I too enjoy a HobNob on occasion.
1755. And Commandos were WWII.
Alan: It’s all right Lynn, it’s just an army saying. Give us another one Michael.
Michael: Kill! Kill! Stab! Twist! Kill!

Pretty sure the term “commando” was only applied to certain battalions of Royal Marines during the Second World War. Obviously the word itself comes from the Second Boer War but the British armed forces only started using it in 1940/41. No Royal Marine in 1755, 1815 or 1915 would be described as a commando.
Yay killing people!
Happy birthday, Royal!
Southsea parkrun goes right by the Royal Marines museum and former barracks. Outside is a memorial called the Yomper, a statue to comemorate the marines who served in the Falklands. In fact, the first turn is at this statue.
One morning over the summer, they did the usual “who is from where” call, and we had a contingent of Argentinians with us. There was an awkward murmur from the crowd, including from the marines who do the run each week.
After the run, as people were milling about, I overheard a group of runners explaining the Falklands war to the Argentinians who seemed to be hearing about it for the first time.
Proud to say my brother passed out of Kings Squad 2022. Saw some of the training and man it is brutal.
No mention of Jimmy Saville any more? I presume the JS room at Lympstone has been renamed by now 🙂
Got a notification for this post but it has a red bin on it.
360 years of cross dressing and nicking anything that’s not nailed down!
NB: I’m ex RN who served with Royal on many occasions.
When you abso-posi-lutely need someone assaulted by a naked lunatic with a rollmat, accept no substitutes.
