  1. The nine terror suspects who were arrested last Thursday in Eindhoven may have wanted to commit an attack on outgoing Prime Minister Rutte, Geert Wilders and Thierry Baudet. De Telegraaf reports this on the basis of investigative sources. The nine were arrested on suspicion of preparing and training for a terrorist attack.

According to the newspaper, the police and the Public Prosecution Service are taking the threat extremely seriously. It is not clear at what stage the planning of the attack was, but the newspaper does report that the threat leads to extra security measures.

Lawyer Peter Plasman, who represents two of the nine suspects, tells De Telegraaf that nasty messages have been shared within the group in which the politicians appear. But according to him, there has been no sign of a serious plan anywhere. His clients have said, according to Plasman, that it is “sarcasm and very bad humor, in corny moods”.

The nine suspects are between 18 and 31 years old and have Dutch nationality. Eight of them were born in the Netherlands and one in Afghanistan. The Public Prosecution Service reported last week that they would sympathize with the jihadist ideas of IS. On Wednesday it became clear that the men will remain in custody for at least two weeks.

Earlier, lawyer Serge Weening, who also represents two suspects, told the NOS that “it seems that the Public Prosecution Service has not taken into account that these are still suspects”. “Every Dutch person now thinks that the suspects have something to do with terrorism.”

Monday it became clear that outgoing Prime Minister Rutte has received heavy security because he is being threatened. Much is still unclear about this. According to De Telegraaf, the threats are seen completely separately from each other.

  2. Are these 2nd or 3rd generation immigrants that are being radicalized via identity-crisis/lack of integration frustrations?
