Well, yeah. When healthcare and housing are so bananas expensive alone, or just as a couple with no kids, people aren’t going to be inclined to have kids and make their fragile financial situation worse.
Have kids so they can grow up to more than likely contribute to making the 1% wealthier while they’re able to barely scrape by? No thanks, it’ll end with me. 🙂
But in poor countries people are having lots of kids
Yes… Kids are very expensive, both in money and in time.
“A collapsing birth rate is the biggest danger civilization faces by far.” Okay, I think climate change is the most dangerous threat to civilization. But back to falling birth rates.
There are a few things going on here. Yes, there is a percentage of young adults who do not think it is responsible to have children due to climate change. But there are also some financial things going on here.
What I find really interesting is that conservatives talk about being a pro family party, yet they continuously vote No to policies that would support children and families.
Family Leave? No.
Health Care? No.
Living Wage? No.
Expanded child tax credit? No.
Funding public education? No.
Then you have the chilling effect of overturning Roe, where women are suffering severe medical complications and actually dying, because doctors say they cannot treat them. In 2024, this is insane.
Then you have the reality of paying for unaffordable housing, and if you have large student loans, there is no way you can pay for childcare. At that point, it is a choice between having children and being able to afford a home, food and expenses. This is where we are at as a country.
If conservatives want to encourage young people to have families, take the threat of climate change seriously and address it and take actionable steps to support children and families.
Stop telling us the trickle down theory will still benefit working-class Americans and create a fair tax that does not shift wealth to the top and expand income inequality.
We’re not cattle. We have choices. Not everyone needs to have children to be happy. Not everyone needs to be married to be happy. Not everything is about procreating.
Enjoy your life. Make the most of it. That’s all.
Or maybe it’s because of the economic issues affecting everyone in this country right now.
