  1. This isn’t a surprise, it’s what they have said repeatedly and openly since 1997. Just get that Overton window a few inches further and it would have gone ages ago

  2. Yes, it is. paying the lease is also a burden, paying suppliers is another burden. paying HMRC is a burden, running a business has lots of burdens, that’s part of running a business.

  3. So no minimum wage, no maternity pay, how long before one of them says we get too many holidays.

  4. I doubt many of us want to pay a plumber more than we have to. If the work we need doing becomes too expensive then we won’t bother. No different with businesses.

  5. Sounds like this needs context as years back he said

“Burton MP Andrew Griffiths warns employers not paying the minimum wage they will get caught”

  6. Say you want us to be a mini America without saying you want us to be a mini America!

    SMH.

  7. Expect more of this.

Even in this very sub the other day a lot of the bucketcrabs seem to have bought into the narrative that someone who is “only” cleaning, doing retail or serving food making 12 quid an hour or (shock horror) *slowly catching their high-20k wage up* (as if we’re the SAME!) is a ridiculous or terrible thing.

A side effect of this societal attitude where Good Jobs are for the Clever People Who Did Well At School and that people on minimum wage are *stupid* (unless there’s a global pandemic, where they’re *Essential* of course) is that people expect that the rate the latter should be on needs to be *punitive*. And Tories love this shit. The Tories want you to see that someone is using a food bank or unable to heat their home and think “well I bet they spend all their money on gambling, drink and drugs” or “just get a better job”. If this is your take, you’re literally being a Good Crab and right-thinking.

I can’t help but think it’s similar to the hatred of people on benefits living what resembles a 21st century life with a phone and a telly and a games console. I genuinely think that a worryingly large percentage of people in the UK think that those beneath them should unironically look like some sort of cartoon character in rags, a red spotted hanky on a stick and a sub-Dickensian living space.

  8. Jez how does the well paid S.C. expect the minimum wage earners to exist ….not live ,just exist . He’s disgusting .

  9. All this party can do is live off the Thatcher legacy free giveaway to maintain power, which they have done quite well.

Unfortunately there’s no more assets to strip and flog for cheap giving one generation a massive rise in social equality at the expense of another.

80 year olds can’t vote forever, as such, no more Tory party in a long long long long long time.

  10. Now you know you can safely ignore anything and everything he says.

Edit. I am now understand why everyone hates the tories

  11. Cutting minimum wage just means extra UC payments. More corporate subsidies.

  12. This sort of stuff plays very well to a large subset of the Tory party. However, it horrifies the type of person the Tories need to win an election.

  13. you gotta get rid of it. think of the money I’ll save when I run a business full of people like me. boy I’d hate to be those guys

  14. Well let’s scrap wage rises for MPs then. Its a burden on the tax payer. He can get a different job if he doesn’t like it.

  15. why does everyone in this country hate everyone else in this country so much

  16. I have a business and know a lot of business owners. Luckily for me I have a very scalable business so it’s just me and my wife who do any work and we make a good living, no employees.

For other business owners who are reliant on labour. They often hire south asian “students” who are here doing usless courses in exchnage for student visas. They are entitled to work for 20 hours a week. Often they are working full time working 45+ hours a week and are only paid for 20 hours.

The business owners have no chocie but to exploit these workers because the minimum wage is just too damn high. For the students they get a chance to work and keep their heads down and hope to just stay in the country for 10 years as part time students hoping they will get a right to indefinite leave. They are massively exploited.

As minimum wage goes higher and higher there will always be demand for these workers.

  17. *Things the shadow cabinet once said:* soon to be a rich vein of bat shit craziness to be mined by the press.

  18. The Tories are elitists who are expert at turning the mass of people against themselves to further Tory self interest and enrichment, dressed up as the only rational economic choice.

  19. Nothing is more burdensome than this dimwit, however.

  20. Can we not underestimate this bullshit?

Remember when Trump was starting and we all thought that his policy/position wouldn’t get him to be republican leader/anything else?

Look where we are now? This is the danger we are looking at.

  21. Ridiculous that the Tories voted to continue being batshit crazy. Cleverly at least had enough self-awareness to acknowledge the Tories need to be “more normal.” A weak opposition.

  22. Paying employees is a burden. Just bring slavery back. Problem solved.

  23. He isn’t wrong.

Minimum wage pulls the bottom rung out of the ladder. If you aren’t worth minimum wage to an employer you won’t get a job.

It’s crazy to assume the government knows what labour is worth in so many industries.

Sweden doesn’t have a minimum wage.

  24. Lmao imagining being working class and still voting for that lot

  25. Has anyone else noticed how perfectly egg-shaped his head is?

  26. Didn’t similar people say the same thing when child slavery was outlawed. Haven’t similar people throughout history said the same whenever the working poor are given anything that might help them to survive?

  27. Paying tax and MPs salaries are also a burden. Can we stop those as well?

  28. So, what are they suggesting? Erase the minimum wage and make it legal for a company to pay their employees 40p an hour?
