Ex-ambassador in Kyiv: EU leaders should be ‘ashamed’

  1. > “Let me tell you how I felt when I listened to the EU leaders announce their sanctions: You should be ashamed of yourselves for the rest of your lives that you left us all alone at this moment to face Russian aggression,” Ukraine’s former ambassador to the EU, Kostiantyn Yelisieiev, told EUobserver from Kyiv on Friday morning (25 February).

Has Zelensky even asked for troops? I thought he’d been constantly clear he wanted Ukrainians defending Ukraine, and the rest of the world to provide sanctions and weapons.

  2. It’s hard to read. But by ignoring and not doing treaties with other countries, I do not see the fault of European leaders here.

Being part of NATO is easier than being part of EU, rightfully so. One year ago, Ukrainians still put men better than women, hunted LGBTQ+, had an instable currency, had a parliament of 20 parties that all hated each other. So. Maybe a candidate for NATO (military alliance) but not for EU (common culture). Sorry.

  3. Why should Ukraine be fast tracked for EU membership, out of pity? Western Balkan countries Albania, Macedonia, Bosnia, Serbia, MNE, and Kosovo all have been been working hard to integrate legislature and culture with EU for years now, why should the Caucasus get in earlier?

  4. Not technically EU’s fault for naivety of the current and past Ukrainian Gov when it came to Usa/Nato alignment.

Who knew, Russia would use millions of Ukrainians that dislike Nato and the ”West” for Separatism to destabilze Ukraine for siding with their sworn enemies. They should have known this isn’t the 2000s anymore, Russia has progressed and can take on sanctions now and will not be a pushover like with the Baltics, when they joined Nato. This all should be common knowledge.

The Pro Move for Ukraine was to reach a deal with Russia and perhaps other that they do not join Nato and don’t host US Military on their soil, ideally before they de facto lost Crimea but even after that, there maybe could have been a compromise.

And yes, Russia is not known to really respect International Law and Treaties (and that subsequently wouldn’t mean 100% safety) but neither are the other 2 Super powers, i guess that’s just what great powers do but definitely better than the situation Ukraine is in now.

  5. I mean to be fair only 6 years ago the situation in Ukraine was so bad a revolution had to take place, ousting the government. Since then there has been “civil war” in several Regions. You can be admitted to NATO under that. And it takes decades to be ready for EU membership.
