Hello, fellow Swede here. Today I read in Swedish news that many people in Finland have become disappointed in Sanna Marin since she left domestic politics. Is that a widespread sentiment? Apparently she has turned to a run-of-the-mill influencer, mostly interested in marketing herself? Source in Swedish:

Most normal people don’t think about her at all nowadays. Personally I think her rebranding is a bit weird but I’m way too busy to be disappointed or mad or criticize her for the actions she’s taken.

I suppose most of us feel that she ultimately turned out to be an empty suit instead of the capable politician she was when she was the chairperson of the city council of Tampere.
There is plenty of people who did not like her even before, and are now ‘What did I told you’.
Run-of-the-mill influencer is quite far from the truth: she’s employed as Tony Blair’s strategic adviser, after a career in Finnish politics. Not exactly a position your average influencer has.
In addition, at least in the sources I follow, it’s been 99% about some people and journalists really wanting to follow her, not her pushing herself. In a short time, there’s been an audio drama and a book or two, some of which have been controversial. She was, for instance, not even interviewed for the book or audio drama.
She got out of politics so whatever she’s doing now doesn’t matter at all.
Among many yes.
Even Finnish left wing alliance party is heavily criticing her. She became a giant two face after she started getting foreign funding and started flying to saudi arabian events as spokewoman.
I think what she did after her prime minister term, running for parliament, getting elected and then fucking off to make money was a bullshit move, akin to a typical politicians retirement plans. Build your brand and connections, and then capitalize on them.
I don’t have a dog in this race but I don’t get how this became as a surprise to some people. It was clear from day one that that’s what she did. Politics aside, that’s the reason why I didn’t like her. Felt like some slimy snake oil salesman.
Well she did turn out to be a tax “planning” hypocrite.
Shame.
I really like the trams in Tampere but other than that i really dont have an opinion ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Covid and Nato stuff she handled ok and prime minister fading away from domestic politics after the term is nothing new. I didnt vote for her or SDP so i dont really care about her resigntion.
fellow…swede?
There are few hardcore fans but I guess there is nothing that will make them think she is not the Jesus 2.0
The “funniest” things are how she started working for Tony Blair in an operation that is funded by Saudi blood money among other things, or how she appears to live on an aeroplane now while talking about how important it is to be “green” and not pollute. A lot of the Democrat voters were very disappointed in how she declared she’d be leaving politics after SDP lost the Prime Minister position = she wouldn’t have been the biggest player in the Parliament house anymore. This followed her telling Dem. voters before the elections that she’d stay if she still got the mandate by public vote.
Turned into a run-of-the-mill hypocrite as soon as bigger €€€ paychecks were on the horizon. In that way she was a highly predictable politician.
I admired her a great deal when she was the PM. She dealt with two massive catastrophes (Covid and Russian invasion of Ukraine) well.
She’s still doing work for Ukraine and that’s good. But did I want one of the more internationally influential Finnish politicians in recent times, ever even, to become a consult for a war criminal (Blair)? Can’t say I did. I can see why she wanted to get the hell out of Finland but this? Of course she’s not asking me, but anyways.
I can’t stand her.
With the amount of total bullshit she got thrown at her by the right-wing populist opposition and the clickbait press, I was a bit surprised she didn’t leave Finland the second her government resigned.
I just feel she betrayed our Social Democrat party, and despite being a part of SDP I really never cared for her cabinet. But still better than our current shitshow.
She’s probably still one of the most popular politicians in Finland. She’s hated by right-wingers because she’s a woman, a social democrat and successful. She’s hated by left-wingers because she’s successful.
Two words – Tony Blair. Two more words, Very Disappointed.
She was not all what foreign media portrayed her to be, sold Uniper(And lost 5.8billion of government money) while being drunk at a festival with 2 text messages etc, then racked up debt and gave free money for everyone while knowing all too well that it wasn’t sustainable, then ran for seat at the government and promised to stay and complete her term only to resign 2 weeks after that statement and became an influencer showing off her money.
Yeah I wonder why people don’t like her
She didn’t do herself any favours when she went to work for a war criminal. But for most of us she’s yesterday’s news.
Well basically she became famous, it went to her head, then she started throwing wild parties with celebrities, cheated on her husband, tried to get re-elected as PM with Trump tactics, insulting opponents and wrecking political dialogue while promising that if she didn’t succeed, she’d continue serving in the parliament as a regular people’s representative. She failed to get re-elected, and it took her about 5 minutes to resign, get a foreign job just for the money, and start flying abroad in a private jet day after day posting about expensive clothes and celebrity gatherings.
So yeah, she’s not so popular these days
Iirc, before the parliamentary election last year she said that she’d complete her term in the parliament, even though she wasn’t running for another term as party leader. She however did the exact opposite and left the parliament soon after her successor was elected. That has been a major source of criticism and disappointment towards her.
She’s not in politics anymore. She is not really a topic of discussion nowadays.
For starters, this is a woman who never won an election. She came to power more or less by accident when the previous PM had to step down. She then took power and governed with at best marginal competence, but this was mainly viewed by her star power as a young and beautiful woman; in reality, she was mainly just reacting to events rather than proactively leading, and just borrowing huge sums of money to kick the can down the road. Her supporters loved this because she was just making it rain with borrowed money without accepting any kind of trade-off, and any criticism of this was met with accusations of misogyny.
as her term went on she showed less interest in the actual business of running the country and more interested in being a hipster/scenester, and had a number of party events (with allegations of drug use that were never verified) that demonstrated a real lack of character. But her cult of personality endured and any suggestion this was not appropriate was again met with accusations of misogyny.
then she went into the election, loses, spends a few months pouting in the opposition and then resigns and leaves town to work with Tony Blair and cash in. She abandoned her constituency and even moved her books out of her hometown, showing a total lack of respect for the people who put her in there in the first place. During this time she also ditched her long-suffering husband because apparently he was of no further use to her.
Now it comes to light that she is engaging in accounting practices to avoid taxes, which while legal, are totally at odds with her comments as PM and with the values of the SDP. Her cult is having a harder time justifying this.
In other words, she is a total charlatan and even the left is finally waking up to what a self-serving individual she is.
‘and I will go ahead and predict this analysis will bring at least a few of her remaining defenders here to explain that Sanna is just a poor victim, but I don’t care. She is probably the worst example of a woman leader in my lifetime, and aside from looking great on the cover of vogue was a complete disaster.
She’s a hack and always was.
Sanna Marin was always more popular outside Finland, than inside Finland. A lot of people didn’t like Marin when she was a prime minister. Even more people dislike her now.

It’s pro-American propaganda or some sort of trolling. I feel that Iltalethi and Iltasanomat have purposefully “Americanised their news” or something these past 10 years or I don’t know any more.
I think she did some things well but during PM times it seemed that she did not want to bring the bad news herself (like covid restrictions) and had someone else to do it for her. Then she would bring the positive news and would be seen in positive light. I hardly ever remeber her being in any YLE’s program where current political topics were discussed. It was like she only commented on things if she knew questions beforehand; someone could write the answers for her. She seemed to lack substance on real debates. No criticism ever taken and the fault was always someone else’s, there were so many scandals.
Some saw her what she started to become during PM years.. and one could call her a hypocrite for the things she has done before and after being in politics. Personally I wish that the person who holds most power in Finland would be interested in more important things than partying with second tier celebrities (dance and party all you want but it felt that she needed acceptance from those people which is sad… like she was now one of the cool girls)
Yeah then she also went to a foreing magazine and painted a picture of Finland as this misogynist country. Someone already mentioned that what actually went down in Finland and what was written in foreign media are totally different stories.
Not sure what happened. She fall from the grace with the drugs allegations, extra marital affairs allegations and divorce . She made Finland popular. Even local news paper back home used to cover her story. Wish her the best
Just go look at her instagram. Not sure if she’s a former head of state or some high-value escort.
Oh, her style of ruining everything and then running away might also explain the dislike towards her.
She was hit hard by right-wingers, the full force of right-wing propaganda machine and some by even the competing faction in her party. In that sense, yes, not that she was ever tolerated by them due to being on the other side.
The coalition government she formed (after the original former had to leave his post due to a right-wing coalition party throwing a fit on their own backroom deals) was the only real option available with those election results, and thus there were the leftist parties, a right-wing party that is currently one of those guaranteeing a far-right party in the government, and another right-wing party that is at odds with the Greens. The point being, it was inevitably stormy at times, even without outside pressure. Those who are mad at her politics are asking for miracles – there are just not enough votes for smooth left-wing politics.
Those who are not mad at her get that it was tough, those neverending attacks on her were nasty, and her changing careers and the country for the time being into being a successful global influencer is human, to say the least.
1. took more dept than any other leader in the Finnish history, and we are paying for it for decades to come.
2. Cheated on her husband allegedly for multiple times and
3. didn’t disclose the personal bills she used tax-payer money for
4. Partied in Kesäranta residence during covid with C/D class Finnish “celebrities”, in their age of mid 20-something
5. fired the head of National Emergency Supply Agency without cause (she needed someone to blame for unavailability of masks).
6. other personality issues, etc., etc.
I am too busy to dislike current government sh1t show.
Right wing press just attacked her while working prime minister, and now they try to create smog screen to reflect critique for current sitting government.
I guess they’re afraid she might get back to politics in a couple of years.
Marin and her whole term was always such a mixed bag, it’s hard to summarize during or after. I appreciate how she managed some things and loathe how she did others.
Covid, Ukraine, NATO and the dumb fuckind “dance scandal” thing happened all on her term. She then divorced and decided to reinvent her career. Hard to imagine anyone going through the gauntlet she did, and not re-think career choices. Wish she hadn’t chosen this though.
I feel like she flipped the middle finger on finnish politics after all the incels hated on her having one fun night out. Can’t blame her too much.
Her government also had very bad economical outcome, and most people are realizing that now, when the aftermath is reality.
Personally i have heard such criticsm from people who during her term hoped for her resign.
Just another champagne socialist.
Who would have thought?!
