50 000 votes on the nato referendum (kansanäänestys). What do you think about this?

  1. Better to do the application on the down low because it might take up to a year even with the fast track option. This is not matter of opinion this is matter of our very existence, we don’t need to vote there is only 1 true answer.

  2. I think pushing for referendum like this when there is not guaranteed support for majority in this issue is good for neither the pro- nor the anti-NATO camp.

  3. I was against nato a few years ago. Then I started to think about it from a selfish perspective. What is stopping Russia from attacking us? Absolutely nothing. I would be ripped from my family to defend this country. I would be happy to do it but I rather not have war. So nato would be another thing that might stop Dwarf Dictator. Just join any defensive pacts possible at this point. Russia has rejected diplomacy. Only power is relevant anymore.

  4. In fact I am against NATO referendum. I do think Finland and Sweden should join NATO, but politicians should have enough backbone to do that decision.

  5. Remember Putin, You did this, Your literally pushing Finland into NATO’s arms by what you are doing to Ukraine.

Also, I want to start a petition on recognizing Taiwan as a nation and opening up an official consulate in Helsinki, Now how does this relate ? Well 1. Much like Ukraine, Taiwan is facing off a autocratic authoritarian dictatorship China that is hell bent on destroying any type of civil voting representative democracy, Much like Russia and the Duma is hell bent on destroying Ukraine currently.

We need to Support counties like Ukraine and Taiwan who face threat’s from their neighbors who don’t have any good track record of human rights.

  6. Well, I signed that as well.

Here’s how I see it: Although the decision to apply to NATO is entirely political, and up to the government, having an advisory referendum does provide credibility and support for any decision that the government makes (unless the decision is opposite from the result of the referendum). In some way one might also think of it as a sign of commitment from the population.

  7. This is a really difficult political/diplomatic issue, and I’m undecided on whether a national referendum is the way to go or not.

That being said – My personal opinion is that since Russia (Putin) has already proven to be a wildly unpredictable entity, this, in my mind, boils down to a) deciding our fate on our own terms by firmly alligning with the west, or b) keep appeasing and hope that Putin won’t dare to attack an EU-member.

It’s SUCH an uncomfortable decision considering the risks, but putting any trust in Putin’s concern for diplomatic “soft power” or global image feels naive at this point.

If there was a vote, I’d vote YES.

    Edit: Spelling

  8. All i know is that if you would join, my country (Sweden) should follow suit immediately, no matter our public opinion. It would cause Putin a much bigger headache if he had to instigate two conflicts instead of one during the fragile admittance-period.

  9. Parlament has been really keen not to take any popular suggestions from this service so it’s mainly just pressure towards government to join nato
