Hi, our apartment has double windows upstairs and we don’t know how to avoid this condensation. It has been so much that the water starts dripping down. We open the windows throughout the day, at least 15 minutes in the morning and 15 minutes right before bed. The second set also has so much condensation, while the windows on the inside never do.

We’ve tried:

  1. Keeping the first set open at all times where the second set is closed while still lufting multiple times a day

  2. Wiping down the second set every time the condensation is there, but it comes back by the end of the day

  3. Having the heat under the window slightly turned on

These windows are really high up so it’s tough to wipe down every time it gets bad. Since the top right window only opens at a kip, we can’t wipe it down because they both come out at the same time.

  1. Buy a Hygrometer and try to keep indoor humidity less than 60%. Opening the windows twice per day might not be enough.

  2. 1. These are old and badly insulated windows
    2. You need to open them more often.

  3. I think with these double windows it is intended. The windows itself are not isolated but together they’re acting like a double-paned window. But as the gap between them is not air tight, water will condense. It’s fine as long as your room doesn’t cool off significantly. Just wipe it off in the morning and be glad the condensation is not happening on the walls. As the other comment mentioned, also monitor your general room humidity.

  4. You might want to by a sealing tape like that.
This could help prevent water going in between the windows, but you still got to ventilate the rooms at least three times a day (morning/ midday/ evening). 5. Such windows are never as tight as modern windows but if you are willing to sacrifice some old towels or similar I found that heating efficiency and condensation get much better if you put some rolled up textile between the windows.

  6. So general rule of thumb:

During heating period always either close inner and outer set, or open both sets for venting. Having only one set open is not recommended and won’t help besides cooling down your apartement without getting rid of the moisture.

During the summer you can open only one set for temperature regulation. If there is moisture buildup in between the windows, open only the outside window.
